winter's nightToday is a day where nothing gets done.  I slept in.  After getting up at 5 am originally.  Far to early.  I get up at 6:30 on a weekday.  Instead of going to get a few more Halloween things for work, I got lunch and went grocery shopping.  I suppose that counts as getting something done.  I read half a book (Undead or Alive) and another that turned out to be a novella.  The novella was an ARC.  It turned out pretty good.  Short, fast, tightly written paranormal mystery by the name of Hibernian Charm.  Worth reading.  Then I finally got around to doing one of my projects (canvas work, A Winter’s Night by Nancy’s Needle) and watching a movie while working on it.  Spy Time.  A spoof of spy spy timemovies from Spain.  Aging spy in an era where old school spies are neither needed or wanted.  Budget cuts mean they don’t really have the funding to do their thing.  Only now one of the villains they put away has escaped and is after his son.  He has to protect his son, the son’s bumbling best friend, and the son’s girlfriend who dumped him because he was too boring.  Amusing movie if you don’t mind subtitles.  I wanted to listen to the Spanish as I was watching it as I’m trying to relearn it.  I took a semester in college and remember nearly nothing.  I’ve been practicing on Duolingo.  Basically, I only recognized a handful of words as the film went on.

2017 Wonder Woman film is a Bible Story

The Christianization of Greek Mythology in Wonder Woman

I had heard wonderful things about the new Wonder Woman movie.  This is after years Wonder Womanand year of the movie and T.V. industry telling us that they just couldn’t market Wonder Woman and that not enough people would want to watch a show centered around a female super hero.  It has proven so popular that I wasn’t able to see it until the third weekend it was out due to sold-out shows at the times that work best for me.  Sold-out morning showing used to never happen.  It is getting more common now.

But I spent a large part of the beginning of the show pissed off at the Christianization of the Greek Mythology in the movie.  It was very pronounced in the start and even more obvious when Ares tells his own side of it.  I really do hate it when movies butcher well-known mythology, and Greek Mythology is perhaps the most well-known in the western world.

Prometheus creating man from clay

Prometheus carving man from clay.

In Greek Mythology, Zeus doesn’t create mankind.  Prometheus shapes man out of earth and Athena breathes life into him.  Since most of the other good things were given to other creatures, he makes man to walk upright and gives man fire.  Zeus is the one who actually didn’t like mankind.   This is why Zeus created Pandora, the first woman.  Giving her a box filled with misfortune and diseases because he knows that she will eventually become curious enough to open the box and release them on mankind.  To top everything else off, in Greek Mythology, Zeus doesn’t create Amazons.  They are actually the daughters of Ares and a nymph.

But in Wonder Woman, Zeus is clearly an allegory of the Judeo-Christian God and Ares is an allegory of Lucifer/Satan.

The world is a beautiful paradise and the gods rule it from on high, at the top of Mt.

amazons-660

Amazons

Olympus.  Then Zeus creates mankind for the gods to rule over and everything is fine.  Only Ares isn’t happy with man and corrupts them.  So Zeus makes the Amazon’s to teach mankind love.  And everything is good for a while, but then mankind goes back to his former ways.

Then follows a great war in the heavens in which almost all the gods are killed and a much weakened Ares ends up wandering the earth, whispering in the ears of mankind.  He is trying to prove that man is not such a wonderful creation and that humans are not good at heart.  That he has never had to corrupt anyone.  He just points things out and people are free to do as they chose.

If it isn’t obvious, I will break it down.

Zeus, like the Christian God, makes man in his own image.

Zeus makes women latter.  This is actually the same but in the movie it is more in line with the biblical creation of women as companions whereas in Greek Mythology, woman is made as a trick to destroy man.

Ares doesn’t like mankind and thinks they are not that great.  Much like Lucifer, as an angel, is not pleased with the creation of man and attempts to prove to God that man is not as good as he thinks.

Adam and Eve and Serpent

There is a great war in the heavens in which Ares finds himself reduced and stuck wandering the earth and whispering in people’s ears, much like a fallen angel and Satan at the serpent.

It doesn’t take much to pull off the veil and reveal that the movie of Wonder Woman took the Biblical creation story and the battle between God and Satan and just switched the names out.   It also ignored a dichotomy it created.  It the world was a beautiful and peaceful place, why would the gods have a god of war?  Even after the creation of man and the gods divided duties, why would they create a god of war over people who were, at least at that time, peaceful?

Did no one else watching the movie see these problems?  I can’t be the only one for whom they just leapt up off the screen .

When you follow out this logic, Diana becomes a sort of messianic figure, an allegory for

Birth of wonder woman

Birth of Diana

Christ.  She was shaped from clay by the queen of the Amazons.  Then Zeus breathes life into her.  Now this is one of the creation stories for her in the comics.  But prior to that, she was shaped from clay by the queen but then each of the different Greek deities then gifts her with something different, like the fairies that attend the christening of Sleeping Beauty, thus making her a child of all the gods and not just the child of Zeus.    Her function is to extend the love the Amazon’s are supposed to represent and to fight for peace and to protect the world from evil influences where she finds them.

Clearly, the writers are trying to tell the story of God’s creation, of the fall of the Angels, of the actions of Satan, and of the birth of Christ.  All hidden under the guise of Wonder Woman.  I am going to guess that this could even be a subconscious reason for the movies popularity among certain groups of people.

A lesson on women’s choices from the tales of King Arthur and his knights.

Loathy LadyThere is a story about one of Arthur’s knights who is on a mission and he meets a witch who will help him if only he will marry her. He agrees. She resolves his mission and now he must keep his promise.  Other versions are where the knight becomes obligated to someone of a higher status who forces him to marry an ugly woman under this other man’s authority.

He is depressed because she is very ugly. She lets him in on a secret. He has to make a choice. She can be beautiful but he must decide when. Does he want her to be beautiful at night, when they are alone together? Then everyone with think he has an ugly wife and feel sorry for him. Or she can be beautiful during the day and everyone will think he is lucky to have such a beautiful wife but she will be ugly at night.

Feeling rather sorry for himself, he decided that it doesn’t really matter to him and tells her to choose which way will make her happier. Her response is, “Oh well, in that case, I would rather be beautiful all the time.” And so she was.

The moral is that men shouldn’t make decisions for women. When you let women makeLady Ragnell their own decisions, you may end come coming out of it better than if you tried to force her to follow your choices.

The other moral, as it is sometimes done, is based on a riddle the knight failed to answer.  What is it that women really want?  After failing to answer correctly and having to wed the ugly woman, by letting her choose, he learns the real answer.  What women really want is self-determination.  The right to make their own choices about their own lives and their own bodies.

Both variations of the moral are nearly identical.  The one that says women want and deserve self-determination focuses more on women and letting them make their own decisions.  The other saying that men shouldn’t make decisions for women focuses on men and what they shouldn’t do.  Either way, I think the story is really appropriate for today’s political climate.

Hide and Seek

notebookI seem to write all my non-move topics in my car while driving.  I then get to a computer or a notebook and I can’t remember very much about it.  It figures.  I had a lot to say about Hillary and Trump and the strangest election I’ve seen in my 46 years.  But then it made me too depressed so I ended up avoiding that topic.

I was trying to get a bunch of boxes out of my way yesterday so I re-watched a bunch of movies.  One was Hide and Seek with Robert Di Nero and Dakota Fanning.  Their acting is brilliant.  You almost never see a child actor/actress who can perform to the level of the great performers and she did so the first time she was placed in front of a camera.  Or so it seems.  Talk about precocious.  I heard a reporter talk about her as if the Twilight movies are what made her famous and I wanted to slap the reporter silly.  Okay, the reporter was very young.  But that doesn’t excuse her for not knowing that Dakota Fanning was great long before she took part in the Twilight movies.

A Young Dakota Fanning

It is interesting re-watching this movie once you know the twist.  Dakota Fanning’s performance, which was great to begin with, becomes even more nuanced.  The writing on this film isn’t brilliant.  And it is very easy to figure out the so called ‘twist’ early on.  One, Dakota is to tiny to have killed an adult.  Two, all the flash backs are happening to her father and are of an event at which she was not present.  Three, her strange reactions when talking to her father about Charlie.

This story is that a shrink’s wife killed herself and his daughter is blaming him and acting out and she creates an imaginary friend who is responsible for all the bad things that she is doing.  ‘Charlie’ goes from fun to scary very quickly.  We actually never see the ‘fun’ Charlie and just have to the daughter’s words for it.  The attempt to make it look like the neighbor grieving over his daughter’s death might be Charlie was a very clumsy attempt.  and therefore one I was unable to buy into so I figured out who Charlie was fairly quickly.  Although, like I said before, it could have been Dakota’s excellent acting against De Niro may have been what gave it away.

I own this DVD and I’ve watched it 3 times now.  This would not be a film that one could watch this many times if anyone else played these two parts.  De Niro and Fanning really carry this film and make a predictable film turn into an entertaining movie.

No Christmas Movies before Thanksgiving

not-christmas-yetI like movies and watch a lot thanks to Netflix being WAY cheaper than cable.  I miss a few shows I like but it is much more affordable this way.  Because of that I have a few movie blogs I follow.  Today, only two days after Halloween, a Christmas movie review popped up in my feeds.

No thank you, I deleted it.  No Christmas before Thanksgiving.  It is bad enough seeing it in the stores before Halloween.  About the same time they start setting up for Halloween, the stores start to clear out and set up the Christmas tree section.  Some stores wait until after Halloween and use that space for the Christmas decorations.  Other stores, bigger store, I’m calling you out Wal-Mart, actually started putting out decorations before Halloween as well.

So I really don’t want to start seeing Christmas reviews before Thanksgiving.  I’m just not mentally prepared for it yet.  I’m not ready for Halloween to be over. I haven’t even thought about Thanksgiving.  It isn’t time to be torturing us with early Christmas propaganda.  We are still having the occasionally 70 something day out.  Non-specific winter movies seem to early now.

One exception I might make, Christmas time horror movies.  That seems like a natural bridge from Halloween to Christmas.  I always wanted to watch the 2006 remake of Black Christmas.black-christmas-2006-poster

From Hell

from-hell-horror-movies-77473_1024_768I came across the film From Hell in a 3.75$ bin and decided to pick it up.  I picked it up over Sleepy Hollow, which I’ve seen several times and like.  I knew I had watched From Hell but wasn’t sure why I had never seen it again.

Now I remember why.  I want injustice to be resolved.  And this film contains a travesty of justice that is never punished because it came down from the crown itself.  In order to hide an unsuitable marriage in the royal family, a female monarch approves a plan that sees the unsuitable bride kidnapped and put into an asylum with a forced lobotomy and just left there.  A scene shows her in a cell by herself, but that isn’t the most accurate.  Women like her would be guaranteed to be raped by staff and non-violent ‘patients’ would often be in general population and would often get raped by other patients as well.

This fact completely ruins the movie for me.  The fact that Jack the Ripper turns out to be the one who is killing off all the women who actually knew about this marriage creates an interesting nuance to the story.  And then to help cover up his part in it, he is lobotomized so he can’t give away the fact that the crown is behind it all.  It isn’t enough for me.

The fact that nothing is ever done to help this woman who didn’t know that her wealthy protector who married her in secret was part of the royal family and she is left with a horrible brain injury in a place that just hides things for wealthy families and is mostly likely to end up living a life of violence and repeated rape is all it takes to make the movie horrible and intolerable to me.

The names in the cast are not enough to over come that fact.  The quality of acting isn’t enough.  I do not recommend this movie ever.

The Third Debate

US Presidential Debates

I am feeling ambivalent about this debate.  I think that people are so polarized that it isn’t really an effective tool this election cycle.  From what I hear, the debates are not helping the undecided to decide.  The debates seem to be making them more confused and even more undecided.

This is going to be an ugly election.  I think it Trump wins it will be a horrible thing for the nation.  I don’t think he understands the limits on the presidency and that he will turn into a nightmare when he finds out it doesn’t work like he thinks it does. I think if Hillary wins Trump with turn into a completely different sort of nightmare and will contest it, fight it, and make a general nuisance of himself.

I feel an actually, physical sensation of nausea and disgust when I see Trump’s face.  I got as far as the hand shake at the start of the first debate and had to change channels.  I watched a weird channel that wasn’t showing debate stuff. I would really like to have the option to what real programing and not a debate that makes me ill.

The second debate was a little better for me.  What really annoyed me is the way Trump kept stalking Hillary and hovering over her.  He was whinny, like a toddler.  He said they only tried to stop him for going over time but they were doing the same thing to Hillary and he said they were not.  He sounds like someone who doesn’t really know about what a president can and cannot do.  But at least I managed to keep my stomach under control while watching him.

I was looking forward to my regular programing tonight.  So I’m cranky.  But I will attempt to watch this.  I think it could be a train wreck.  Everyone says the second was worse than the first one and the second wasn’t as vicious as I was expecting.  Although the reporting on it made it sound worse.  But if each escalates, and the attacks that went on after it, I think tonight will be much worse.  I guess it may be more like I was expecting last time.  All I can do is try.

Part of me wanted to avoid all social media and try to avoid this election until voting day.  Mostly because of the visceral reaction I have towards Trump.  To be honest, I’ve had the reaction to him as long as I can remember.  Which is one of the reasons I could not watch the apprentice.  I stopped watching beauty pageants before he bought out the Miss America or Miss Universe or whichever one he took over.  So I can’t blame him for not watching them anymore.

No Internet

Posted in Entertainment, Writing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 16, 2016 by urbannight

internet-connection-imageI haven’t had any home internet access and I probably won’t get it until I get the electricity’s ‘new customer’ deposit paid off.  $200 dollars if you are not an existing customer.  The power has been in my former roommate’s name for the past 5 years.   That hurt.  I didn’t expect it to be that high.

So I didn’t bother to hook up my computer.  I finally did it Thursday night.  I wanted to build a house with my apartment’s layout and see how the sims dealt with it.  It will not be exact.  Sims actually will not let you do a bathroom like mine.  The game indicated there isn’t enough room for the door to open and close.  I find this very funny since the game was built to set out floor plans originally.  And my bathroom would not pass muster.

Instead I focused on getting my first ‘genie’ family in Sims three together so they can have kids before the man ages up to old age.  I’m having trouble getting them pregnant.  I couldn’t get them pregnant but I did get them to get married.

I am thinking that I should have waited to finish unpacking the rest of the boxes.  Having the computer up and running may slow that activity down.  My biggest problem is that at this point, until I can get two more book shelves, I’m somewhat stuck.  I have more stuff than I have space.  I can get a storage unit in the building but that is also going to have to wait until I get everything caught up and the cards I put the moving costs onto paid off.  The storage space.

The book shelves will be one in three weeks and one more four weeks after that.  My biggest issue will be getting them into the car and house.  The 35 lb boxed ones are no problem.  But these are the tall ones I need now and those are 50 lbs.  I may be able to get away with one tall one and one short one.  I want to do the tall one first to make sure.

I’m trying to accomplish my internet stuff before and after work at the office, in the meantime.  It is frustrating.  But I don’t know when it got so expensive.  It costs twice as much as it did when I last paid for internet.

Deadfall Trail (2009)

Posted in Entertainment, Movies, Writing with tags , , , , , , , , on October 15, 2016 by urbannight

I was actually going to do a short post about the view from my new apartment.  Only I got my computer set up instead of taking any photos.  Longest I’ve not had my computer turned on.  Over a month.  It will probably be another month until I can get internet access.

So that means another horror movie.

Not unless you want to hear stories about unpacking; like how it took me 3 weeks to find my cork screw so I could get into a bottle of wine and why I didn’t want to buy another one since I had bought one before moving only to find my missing one while packing and I didn’t want to buy a third one.

First warning is that there is no trail in this film.  They are doing an extreme wilderness survival trip.  They take nothing but a single bottle of water.  Paul is a bit younger and has never done this before.  That causes Julian to completely flip about that.  His over reaction makes no sense.  Eventually, there is the implication that he is suffering PTSD due to his war experience and that these trips help him deal with it.  But having someone how is just learning about this survival stuff was more than he could handle. But hey, everyone needs to learn sometime, right?

The movie isn’t a strong movie, not a lot of action but there is a lot of arguing.  It is a slow burn.  But Paul shows he

julians-meltdown

Julian’s Meltdown

has guts and a willingness to do what it takes and yet that doesn’t really help any as far as Julian is concerned.  He his blinded by the fact that Paul has no experience and can’t get past it.  They finally reach their goal location.

John is their mutual friend.  John is the one keeping the peace and bridging the gap.  So of course John suffers a serious injury and they have to work together.  This does not go well.  Things get much worse after John dies or is killed, depending on if you believe Paul or Julian.  I know where I stand.  Julian continues to devolve while Paul proved that he had what it takes for extreme wilderness survival.  But this was his first time and he isn’t as good as Julian.

The surprise twist at the ending really isn’t a surprise.  What is a surprise is that there are supposedly two women in the film.  John’s wife, whom I don’t remember ever seeing on screen, and Mother Earth, whom I also don’t remember ever seeing.  I’m guessing I either missed it when I was stitching on my projected and I looked down or their parts ended up on the cutting room floor.

While not a great show and sometimes a bit boring, it did keep me watching because I wanted to know who would get out of the wilderness.  I wasn’t really happy with the ending but it was what I expected. (Think Lord of the Flies.  That might be too much of a spoiler.)  The acting was better than I expected.  I didn’t think it was going to maintain my interest and it did.  So give it a try.  So long as you watch it for free.  For goodness sake, don’t pay anything for it.

Lily ‘Calla’ Brandybuck. Back story prep. One Ring RPG.

She should be in pants but the program won't let you put female Hobbits in pants.

She should be in pants but the program won’t let you put female Hobbits in trousers.

Once upon a time, in a part of the Shire called Buckland, a hobbit family with a lot of sons lived. The mother always wanted a little girl to dress up and do all the girlish things she wasn’t able to do with her sons. Eventually, she did have a baby girl, born with fair skin and a shock of black hair. What she didn’t count on is that any younger sibling wants to play with her older siblings. So little Lily, as her mother named her, wanted to tear around after her pack of older brothers. This did not really surprise much of the Shire, for most of the Hobbits living there thought those that lived in the Buckland area were a bit odd at best or downright mad at worst. They were a more curious and more active and more adventurous sort.

Lily’s mother despaired of ever getting her to behave properly and the more she pushed the more Lily tried to be like her brothers the more Lily resisted and the more troublesome she became.  Lily grew up to be a tomboy and troublemaker.  But at least she wasn’t a bully.  She like to pull pranks and practical jokes which occasionally got out of hand.

When two of Lily’s older brothers both reached their majority at 33 years of age, they wanted to take off and go adventuring.  Lily’s parents kitted her out in suitable clothes and travel gear and even got her bow and dagger for hunting and cooking and a short sword for protection.  They knew she at least had the basics down from practicing with her brothers who would occasionally get humans to teach them things when the went to town to trade with them.  They hoped that actually living in the rough, traveling, and making do for themselves would make Lily realize that adventuring wasn’t all that glamorous and she would finally come home and settle down and behave like a proper hobbit lady.  Well, as proper as a Hobbit from the Buckland side of the Shire can be.

Unfortunately, this plan backfired.  Lily loved to travel as much as her brothers.  She loved seeing new places and people.  She also discovered that most people underestimate Hobbits.  Either they treat them as children or they treat them as simple country folk who are innocent and naive.  To be protected or taken advantage of, depending on the other person’s inclinations.  Lily found this to be very advantageous and discovered a niche market for gathering and selling information on what competing businesses are doing in secret.  She also learned she was good at liberating object from one person to another.  This bothered her a bit but she discovered that a surprising number of people liked to blackmail others and people would pay her to get back the evidence the blackmailers had on them.  This wasn’t steady work put paid well enough.

To keep people from connecting this shady activities and her, she took on the name Calla to use for her wandering and her less than legal activities and used Lily Brandybuck for everyday living in town.  Strangely enough, she learned all the ladylike behavior her mother always wanted her to learn in order to keep people underestimating her.  So she played the part of a rather innocent young Hobbit woman who had enough curiosity about the world to want to travel.

Lily originally just followed along with her brothers.  But they were wanderers who were motivated by wanting to know what was over the next hill.  Lily liked traveling but she also wanted a home base.  Some place to go back to when she wanted a break.  She wanted a goal.  If she was going someplace new, she wanted a reason and a purpose.  Because of her skills in getting into places from which people wanted to keep others out, she became popular with treasure hunting groups, and was able to keep up a good living from her share of the treasure,  stealing back evidence from blackmailers, and the selling of information.

Lily continues to get letter from back home keeping her updated on the happenings in the Shire with inquires on when she plans to come home, settle down, and get married.  Lily suspects she will never return to the Shire. Maybe to visit, someday.  She suspects that if she ever marries, it will have to be a some one like her, who likes adventure but isn’t really a wanderer who has to keep moving all the time, and won’t expect her to behave like a proper Hobbit wife.  Lily will never be ‘proper’.
