US Presidential Debates

I am feeling ambivalent about this debate.  I think that people are so polarized that it isn’t really an effective tool this election cycle.  From what I hear, the debates are not helping the undecided to decide.  The debates seem to be making them more confused and even more undecided.

This is going to be an ugly election.  I think it Trump wins it will be a horrible thing for the nation.  I don’t think he understands the limits on the presidency and that he will turn into a nightmare when he finds out it doesn’t work like he thinks it does. I think if Hillary wins Trump with turn into a completely different sort of nightmare and will contest it, fight it, and make a general nuisance of himself.

I feel an actually, physical sensation of nausea and disgust when I see Trump’s face.  I got as far as the hand shake at the start of the first debate and had to change channels.  I watched a weird channel that wasn’t showing debate stuff. I would really like to have the option to what real programing and not a debate that makes me ill.

The second debate was a little better for me.  What really annoyed me is the way Trump kept stalking Hillary and hovering over her.  He was whinny, like a toddler.  He said they only tried to stop him for going over time but they were doing the same thing to Hillary and he said they were not.  He sounds like someone who doesn’t really know about what a president can and cannot do.  But at least I managed to keep my stomach under control while watching him.

I was looking forward to my regular programing tonight.  So I’m cranky.  But I will attempt to watch this.  I think it could be a train wreck.  Everyone says the second was worse than the first one and the second wasn’t as vicious as I was expecting.  Although the reporting on it made it sound worse.  But if each escalates, and the attacks that went on after it, I think tonight will be much worse.  I guess it may be more like I was expecting last time.  All I can do is try.

Part of me wanted to avoid all social media and try to avoid this election until voting day.  Mostly because of the visceral reaction I have towards Trump.  To be honest, I’ve had the reaction to him as long as I can remember.  Which is one of the reasons I could not watch the apprentice.  I stopped watching beauty pageants before he bought out the Miss America or Miss Universe or whichever one he took over.  So I can’t blame him for not watching them anymore.

Food this week….

This week I’m making some interesting made up recipes.

Spinach and Clam Sauce Spaghetti with Sea Scallops.

Put 1T butter and a drained can of minced or chopped clams into a small sauce pan, season with salt and cayenne.  Chop a cup or large handful of spinach.  Add to sauce pan.  Add 6 T of spaghetti sauce and 2T of pesto sauce.  Let simmer on low while cooking up 1.5 servings of spaghetti noodles.  Drain and put into sauce, stir.  Cover on lowest heat to keep warm.  Sear 3 or 4 sea scallops in butter, drizzled with lemon, seasoned with salt and cayenne.  Cut into half, plate pasta with spinach and claim sauce, place scallops on top.  Serve.

Chicken and Avocado on Rice. (by far the easiest)

Buy chicken strips cut for stir-fry.  Dice up.  Season to taste.  Fry up.  While frying, put 2 packets of Uncle Ben’s Basmati Rice in microwave and cook per instructions.  Half and dice up one avocado.  Put rice into 2 – 4 bowls.  Season rice to taste.  I use Cayenne.  Divide fried chicken over the rice.  Top with diced avocado.  Serve.  (I tend to make larger portions because avocado needs to be eaten quickly and I cook for myself.  If you have a family, making this as four servings with a salad and a second veggie side would make for a more balanced meal.)

Sausage and Cabbage in Ro-Tel.  ( someone gave me this one)

Melt a stick of butter in a pan.  Saute a shredded small cabbage and diced onion for 5 minutes.  Cut up sausage or kielbasa.  Add kielbasa and a can of Ro-Tel.  Cover and simmer for 20 – 25 minutes.

Beef and Spinach with Ravioli Soup.

1 lb meat, (I’m using beef).  Fry up with some onion.  Add half pot of water.  Bullion or broth. Season to taste.  Bring to boil.  While this is going on, chop up several cups of spinach.  Have a package of whatever flavor of stuffed Ravioli or Tortellini trips your trigger.  Add the pasta. Cook until done.  Add spinach.  Simmer until spinach is wilted and serve.  I’ve made this with Kale as well and chicken and ground turkey and ground chicken.  The only way I hated was with the ground chicken.  I just think I hate ground chicken.

Hy-Vee Grocery stores are a rip off.

Far too expensive. You would think they were a high-end store. They aren’t. Just over-priced.

Went to Hy-Vee. Never again. The most over priced ‘regular’ grocery store I’ve ever been too. I only went there because road construction was blocking access to my normal store. I normally go to Bakers or Walmart Marketplace or even Family Fair (formerly No Frills).

The generic items and the sale items and the sale on store brands were all at least .25 cents to a dollar more than the regular prices at all the other stores. A generic brand on sale should never be more than a regular item at any other stores.

Maybe the generic wasn’t on sale, but the prices were so high it was confusing me.  My brain was in knots by the time I left.  I was so pissed off.  I spent about 15 dollars more on my groceries that I should have.  But every place else was really out of my way at the time.

To top it off, they didn’t have a number of things that I can get at any time at any other store. I had to scrap my entire menu for the week and figure out what I was going to have that week based on what they had in the store. These were items that I consider basic staples and would expect to find in any grocery store I walk into.

Second worst shopping experience. Only one that was worse was a trip to an Aldi’s once

An attempt to describe my migraine.

Mini Hammers

Mini Hammers

I feel like someone is trying to play my skull like a musical instrument using those cute little hammers.  Most of the ‘notes’ being in one area with a smattering of ‘notes’ scattered over the rest of the skull.    All this after someone with me on one side of the face with a rubber mallet.  So my eyeball feels like it has swollen up to twice its size and can’t fit in the eye socket anymore so it might pop out any second.  This is on the same side as the large cluster of ‘notes’.  And then someone has grabbed my entire head and is trying to lift the skull off the spine or is trying to lift my entire body by pulling up on my head.  To top it all off, the same side that has the most pain also seems to have an earache.

What happened to my quiet time?

clock

I can’t think in the mornings. To start out with, I am not a morning person. It is odd because since the time change Sunday, I’ve been waking up at 4:30, what would have been 5:30, which is earlier than I normally got up anyway.

The upside is that I can usually get to work early for some morning OT. The down side is that I start to drag long before lunch hour.

When we first moved to this new building, those of us who started at 7:30 had a very quiet office to work in. It was a peaceful start to get a jump on a productive day. Now it is a loud, noisy, bustling place at 7:30 am. It is annoying, distracting, and makes it impossible to get a good jumpstart on the day.

It doesn’t help that all the new people ever hired to replace anyone or to build up the numbers in the unit to deal with increasing business have all wanted to start at 7:30. So 8:00 people left and were replaced with 7:30 people. This doesn’t help the afternoon when we need coverage for the last half hour of the day. The newest hire wasn’t given a choice.

This is why I try to get to work extra early, so I can get my quiet time back. I need that peace to get my brain in gear before the distractions start, if I don’t then the distractions keep me from working as I want to. I find myself staring at the monitors trying to find that place of stillness and peace and balance from whence all effectiveness flows.

The unit next to us now is a recovery unit who are on the phones nearly as often as my unit. The problem is that most of them get to work even earlier than us. Some mornings they are working in silence and other mornings they are loud and boisterous. This means that even if I get to work early I can’t find my peaceful, quiet, time that gives me that edge the remainder of the day.

It doesn’t help that we are now using a TPA that is so bad that half of our complaint calls are all about them and 100% of the calls about the TPA are complaint calls. It is so stressful anymore that I dread opening a file and seeing the name that indicates the file went to the TPA. It’s enough that I’m contemplating job hunting and I really don’t want to do that. I’m finally making a decent wage and I don’t want to have to start over again at a starting wage.

If only I had my peace and quiet in the mornings once again and maybe I would have my equilibrium in place before the day started. But maybe even that would no longer help. I don’t rightly know anymore. I just have to take it one day at a time.

You might think of urine as liquid gold – or just a little gross.

Urine is surprisingly useful.  The saying, “full of piss” once referred to having white teeth.  It was used to brush the teeth with to whiten and clean the teeth an mouth by Romans and Europeans used it to clean the house as it was better at cleaning and brightening objects than the soaps of the day were.  In fact, this is why Romans also used it at public laundry facilities.  Ammonia is a base and therefore good at neutralizing stains which were usually caused by things that were more acidic.

The dying and tanning industries were also collecting and using urine because of it’s cleaning and brightening properties and that it helped get other biological matter off leather while making it softer.  It was also used on and industrial scale to make explosives and gunpowder.

Modern science is using it to regrow teeth (China), make fuel (Nigeria) and create medications for use in hormone therapy, improved composting, and NASA filters it for drinking water in space.

I thought this would be longer, but a lot of the uses I remember being told turned out to be untrue.  Mostly the first aid related uses.  Such as peeing on injuries to clean them.  Which could be used if there were no water sources nearby.  It is only sterile inside the body, it becomes contaminated with bacteria on the way out.  But in swampy areas, polluted areas, and areas with no water source, it could still be used as it could be the cleanest water nearby.  Some water poor areas still use animal urine to wash up in because it does have cleaning properties and water for drinking is too valuable to use for bathing.

Decorative Salad

This is the story of salads.  Or of the salads I think I ought to be eating. Because every time I go to Lauritzen Gardens I think about salads. They always have planters planted full of things that look like salad. Many types of salad greens make decorative plantings and a number of flowers are actually edible.

On any given day I kinda crave a good salad. But I’m terrible at it. I don’t eat it fast enough and salad fixings end up going to waste. A bowl of greens with a tiny bit of dressing isn’t to difficult to do, but a really good salad takes a lot of work. Cutting up cauliflower and broccoli into really fine bits, mincing sandwich ham, onions, chives. My mother makes very fine, very meticulous salads. It it is going to be for more than her an my dad, she puts the different salad ingredients into different bowls so people can put what they want into their salads. I love having my mom’s salads. Only she lives in Idaho and I live in Nebraska.

I have been thinking about salads and wanting them a lot more often lately as I keep thinking about losing weight, getting my blood sugar and blood pressure down, just getting more healthy in general. In fact, I mentioned several times today, to my roommate, that I wanted a salad and wanted to get salad ingredients at the store. I thought it was clear that I liked the idea of a trip to the store. He ended up going through the drive through on the way home.

Now, I can eat fairly okay at this particular fast food place. If I’m careful, I can keep it weight friendly and stay in my bounds for my blood sugar. I have to avoid soda thought. My roommate is also diabetic and his latest doctor visits have seen a great deal of improvement while mine have somehow gotten worse. It doesn’t help that CHI and BCBS didn’t renew their contract and now everyone is trying to find new doctors and the waiting lists are 2 months long to get in to see anyone.

Needless to say, no salad, no salad fixing for tomorrow, and going through my photos makes me want a salad even though I am no longer hungry. I am also wanting to find cooking pumpkins, because cooked pumpkin tastes yummy.

Cooked pumpkin is yummy. It is just another type of squash or gourd after all. But sometimes, some squash can look a little obscene. Or do I just have a dirty mind?
