In memory of a broken ankle: laughing the pain away.

My break must have been a hairline fracture, although they never said so, because I could never see it as clearly as you can on this picture.

This started out as a reply to a freshly pressed article and I realized it was a blog entry all on its own.

I remember when I broke my ankle a few (5 or 6 really) years back.  I fell half way down the steps.  There were four steps.  I broke my ankle on step three.  It’s all in how you land.  Now, I also severely sprained the other ankle.  I felt like I was going into shock.

I had enough first aid/CPR classes to feel aware of that and to know that shock can be fatal.  I was rushing to work, late, and all the neighbors had already left.  So I was a bit stuck, sitting on the sidewalk at the bottom of the steps, partly blocked from the view of the road by a creeping rose-bush in late June.

I didn’t have access to a blanket and I had no way to lay down and elevate my feet.  Everything else was totally out of the realm of possibility.  So I did the only thing I could think up.  I sat there for a while doing the meditative breathing that I learned from a cassette tape of Daoist breathing mediations.  It seemed like a strange impulse buy one year but you would not believe how often those breathing exercises came in handy.

It was probably only 15 minutes.  I felt like everything was going back to normal.  I have always paid very close attention to body signals.  So I thought I was in the clear for going shocky.  But then I had to figure out how to get back UP the steps and into the house to call a friend to take me to the hospital.   Once I crawled up the steps on my hands and knees, now totally blocked from the view of any passers-by, and sat with my back against the door, my legs stuck out in front of me.  From that position, the dead bolt was completely out of reach.  Even standing on my knees, I was not able to reach it.  After about 10 minutes of gathering what strength I had, I pulled myself up onto my badly damaged feet and unlocked the door.

This was not the end things.  You see, I didn’t keep a phone in the living room.  I had one in my bedroom and one in the kitchen and one in the basement.  I had yet to invest in a cell phone.  The nearest was the bedroom and I had to drag myself back there and make a call, then drag myself back to the livingroom couch (was next to the door) to wait.  And off the emergency I went.

Once there, I couldn’t  stop laughing.  I got a lot of strange looks.  They thought the right was sprained the left broken.  It was the other way around when the x-rays came back.  Some people thought I broke both of them.  And still I laughed.  Finally someone asked me why I was laughing.

I had two options.  Laugh or cry.  I was SO much pain.  Later, I would discover that the family of pain killers they wanted to give me didn’t work for me and I spent weeks in more pain than I should have.  But I broke my ankle falling two steps down.  Two steps.  I nearly broke both of them.  A little more pressure on the sprained one might have done it.  The sprained one turned twice as black as the broken one and must have swollen up twice as much too.  It was truly amazing to look at!

There was too much to laugh about and why cry when you can laugh?

Who Needs a Pina Colada? I DO!

I’m tired and grumpy, hence the lack of pictures.

I got to my gaming group last night late.  There was an accident blocking a road and I had to take a detour that let me into an area I didn’t know I it took longer to get back to a road I did know.

The upside is that I got the pleasure of killing another boss.  Only after they sat and discussed coup de gras.  Only I thought they were talking about another person’s turn and kind of tuned out.  What they really wanted was to scrap what I had just done and do a coup de gras.  Since I’ve not had an opportunity to do any crit rolls, they then had to explain exactly what I needed to do.  All I really wanted them to tell me is which dice to roll and how many times and when to add the modifier.  I didn’t need the long version.  I have to admit, I was really trying to stay awake.  I was really sleepy when I got there.

Of course, the Pally was a bit miffed (not really) because now we couldn’t question the insane priest.  But hey, what do you expect from a Chaotic Evil warrior with an axe to grind.  Literally, I was using a great axe.   And the priest killed my neutral ranger friend who was all for burning down the town as I was.  I kept the head by the way.  A girl needs her trophies.

So we ran right up to the stop time and there was another accident blocking my route on the way home.  Only this was worse.  Well, I don’t know about the accident but the dead ends were.  It was a housing development that went in a while back. Then the recession hit.  So there were lots of empty lots and lots of roads that just stopped.  So I got home late.

I want more sleep.  And then various things made me cranky today.  Sanctuary was cancelled.  I expected that.  The last episode makes me think the writers did too.  As we find out that Magnus spend her 150 ish long ‘vacation’ building a secret, underground, hidden sanctuary.  The end echoed lines from the first episode.  As a series finally, it was not very satisfying.  The overall feeling was they were making a season finale that could double as a series finale if they didn’t get picked up again.

I tried to use the feedback link on SyFy’s own website.  It doesn’t work.  It bounced back as undeliverable.

Why are you alienating and driving off the science fiction fans whom you would think were your target audience.  Years ago, “SciFi” was a fairly bad station that seemed to mostly air someone’s old collection of sci-fi and B-movies.

Then, the station pulled itself up by its bootstraps, got it together, and started offering great science fiction shows.  But you have a history of cancelling shows, often without warning, so the writers are not able to write a finale to tie up the show.  Usually, you cancel the shows at the height of their popularity.

Now you are bringing on all sorts of reality shows, wrestling (which no one has been able to understand why you added it in the first place), and a mish mash of other things other than scripted science fiction.

You are going the way of M-TV.  You should change your name again to reflect the fact you are no longer providing programming for the science fiction fans.

That is what I tried sending them.

Then I had a banquet lunch.  Swedish Meatballs.  The dish on the box looks very good.  The sauce did not look like the sauce on the box.  It was not good.  I was very sad.  I wanted what was advertised and not the crap they actually put in the box.

Now I want to go home.  I brought a change so I can stop at the fitness center on the way up the hill to the apartment.  Then I have to clean of the dinning room table.  I have an episode of Bones to watch.  I need to clear off the coffee table too.  I should put away the laundry and make the bed.  Then clean off the dressers and end tables.  I have “Flat Surfaceitis”.  This is the need to put things on flat surfaces.

What I really want to do is take a hot bath, have a pina colada, and play some SWTOR.

Because it was too fun!

strewth! I just got slapped with a wet salmon – really – I have not updated this since you last visited… You would not believe how terribly tardy the Victorian internet can be. I prostrate myself in sorrow and beg thy forgiveness..

I am lost in a sea of pseudo-olde-english with learning to play lawn bowls, being distracted by the shiny, just generally being asleep, dreaming and chancing to anyone unfortunate to cross my path, my day is a nightmare I would like to wake up from mid-morning to sun down and beyond. I am plotting and planning. perchance.

I swear on the bones of my ancestors to send a missive out on the wire, post-haste. Fully! Unless of course the pool with the cocktail bar is heated!.

Wiggly Mystery Substance

Posted in Food with tags , , , , on August 31, 2010 by urbannight

Gelatin has always been a sort of mystery substance to me.  It was this wiggly squishy substance, a cheap desert most suitable for children.  Although memories of being a small child in the early 70’s indicate adding fruit and marshmallows spruced it up enough to be served at gatherings and potlucks.

As I was removing my nail polish I notice that the remover was labeled “With Gelatin  – Protein Enriched”.  Hmm.  Jello in my nail polish remover.  Really?

I seem to have this vague memory of being told they couldn’t have Jello in jails because of the bone content in Jello.  So I was curious and decided to look it up while it was fresh in my mind.  Surely I am not the only one to have been curious about this strange food that seems very un-food-like.

It is made from collagen which comes from bones. And has been around since the Middle Ages.  Now considered a cheap desert, it was once only for the rich.  After all, it was the rich who usually had enough meat products cooked up regularly to produce enough bones to produce enough collagen to make a gelatin desert.  They also had the staff to devote the time to the production process which seems to be rather time consuming and laborious.  It would take an entire day for the average housewife to produce.  Just for one batch of desert.

Since it is nearly tasteless alone, flavorings would be added.  The traditional flavorings (until the 1900’s) were tart rather than sweet.  So it was often served clear.

While being from a protein source it was often suggested to people on liquid diets for its protein content. Unfortunately, in the 1960’s when liquid diets became the fad, many people died from malnutrion thinking they were getting protein by eating it.   It actually causes you to LOSE protein if you try to eat it exclusively.

Gelatin moulds were treated as family heirlooms and much prized.

The product has so many uses in so many industries that it is like the petrolium of the food world.

Love it, hate it, or indeferent to it, it is still an interesting item when you start to look at the history of it and it.
