Shocked and Amazed

About a year ago, our work load doubled. We were ending the day with 40 things still needed to be done on a regular basis. Business was really picking up and they started to try to hire more people to keep up. It wasn’t just my unit that was busy and behind. Everyone one was overloaded.

The last time I was relaxed, about a year and a half ago. And I was sick at the time. But relaxed.

The last time I was relaxed, about a year and a half ago. And I was sick at the time. But relaxed.

Then around last November or so, the work load went up again, nearly tripled from what it had been originally. We were now ending the day with around 60 tasks waiting.

My baseline is when we had 10 to 20 tasks left over.  Which at the time was thought to be too high.  But the person who put the things into our workflow would dump a huge batch in about an hour before closing, which is only 30 minutes before the first batch of people leave for the day.  There was no way to get those items finished before closing.

The hiring to get enough staff for the new workloads hadn’t been done in a hurry so now we were REALLY feeling it.

Today at 8:30 am was the first day in over a year where my primary tasks were caught up. The bucket I work from was down to 0.

Zero.

Nothing.

Empty.

WOW.

That hasn’t happened in over a year. Over 12 month, probably about 14 months really.

I haven’t had to hunt for something to do in that long. I don’t really know what to do with myself. In order to try to find a different way to balance the clerical work loads, job duties were shifted and shuffled and moved around. In some cased, procedures have changed for work buckets from which I no longer pull. So I can’t just jump in and help with those. I am sort of at a loss this morning.

I need to find a topic to write about. Or work on photos but my camera died. Well, it’s ability to operate from a battery died. And I can’t afford to replace it until May 9th at the soonest.   The camera, not the battery.  I did that already.  The journey to find a battery made me realize it was probably time to just replace the camera.  Maybe I should clean out my desk drawers and re-organize. I’m not sure. If I didn’t have to stay on the phone lines, I would walk around the office to stretch my legs.

What I really want to do is a happy dance around the office. That that would look a little silly.

Is the Economy or are Women’s Issues more important? A Changing Rhetoric.

People who are pro-life had been using pro-abortion instead of pro-choice in order to change the rhetoric of the debate.  To sensationalize it more.

Okay, fine.

In that case, I’ll change it too.

Instead of pro-life, I’ll use:

Anti-choice

Anti-freedom

Pro-chattel

Pro-brood mare

Anti-woman

Misogynistic

Pro-male dominance

Pro-male superiority

Anti-self determination (if you female)

People are saying the focus should remain on the economy and that this is a distraction issue.

I disagree.  The economy goes up and down and responds to WAY to many world-wide variables and, in the end, the government can only do so much in response to it.  To truly have any governmental influence on the economy, the government will need to have more influence and control in the business world than the business world wants to allow.

On the other hand, women’s right and freedoms in a male dominant society will ALWAYS be an issue and far more under the influence of government policy than the economy will ever be.  Therefore, it truly is a more vital and pertinent issue for us than just the economy and jobs.

And if you do not think we are still in a male dominated society, I think the last year couple of years have reminded us that have gotten complacent.  We thought we came a long way even if we didn’t have true pay equality yet.  But the GOP is clearly trying to push us back and restore more male control of the most fundamental female issues.  We need to start fighting back or we will continue to lose ground.

A group of men should not be controlling women’s reproductive rights.  By letting them say ‘no abortions’ is sending a message that a person who doesn’t exist is more important than a woman who already exists.  It says a woman has no value beyond her ability to make babies.  It says that it’s okay for women to risk death on the change that another life might be created.  It says that it is okay to for people to have children they don’t want or for whom they can’t provide.  In a world where rapists have successfully sued for visitation rights, they want to force women to have babies that may force them into keeping contact with the person who raped them.

This is unacceptable.  Women should have the right to choose.  They should have the right of self-determination.  People who base their pro-‘life’ beliefs on religious believes should NOT be forcing that religious based view on the rest of society.

My two cents. . . (if you want more, I need more than 2 cents).

A vote for Romeny/Ryan is a vote to support the right of the very rich to rape and pillage the rank and file of regular Americans in order to line their own pockets. The very image of the Robber Barons that were whitewashed and turned into role models as ‘captains of industry’.

It’s a vote for “the ends justify the means’.

It is a vote for the subjugation of women and a return to 1950’s morality and the stagnation of society.

It is a vote to keep government out of business and put government into your homes and bedrooms.

Obama may have been a disappointment but he is still a better choice than the above.

Why the GOP is Dragging the Country Backwards.

The US Navy has come up with a stealth submarine that is so expensive that it would cripple the military to build them. It is described as, “A super-stealthy warship that could underpin the U.S. navy’s China strategy will be able to sneak up on coastlines virtually undetected and pound targets with electromagnetic “railguns” right out of a sci-fi movie. (Eric Talmadge, AP)”

Everything seems to be getting to expensive for the government to do anymore. Advancements in military technology and the space program just to name two. Personally, I blame uncontrolled, Free Market, capitalism. By not putting any type of controls on it, Capitalism has been allowed to rape the populous in order to keep increasing the profit margins. Prices keep getting pushed up to get the most out of ever person. Everything is more expensive and most of the money gets tied up in those big businesses and people have less and less to spend.

We also have a situation that seems very odd. We have a large portion of out of work people. More technology tends to use fewer people. Some fields have nearly disappeared. We are also told we have a shrinking work force as more Baby Boomers are retiring and we don’t have enough workers to keep up the tax base to fund their social security benefits.

The real answer is that we need fewer people. The technology of the future uses fewer people so we need to produce fewer people. That means we have to figure out a better way to fund the government retirement programs. This wouldn’t be as bad a problem is we stopped the out of control cost increase as businesses try to milk the population of every penny they have. But once the population starts to die off and if we make a point not to over procreate then there will be more money for the rest of us. There will be more money for science and technology that will take us into the future.

At this rate, it is clear that we are not going to progress. We can no longer afford it. We are not even going to sit here and stagnate. We are already slipping backwards and regressing. The very science fiction that gave people the ideas to strive for is also becoming darker, more dismal, more depressed. So much so that one writer challenged other writers to start writing more hopeful futures with new ideas. The current science fiction seems to have stopped creating new technological ideas that might exist in the future. But even should they get those creative, inventive juices flowing, the finite money supply will be so tied up in corporate business that it just won’t be there to fund the projects.

So, if the government and military really want to continue advancements in modern weaponry, then the government needs to look at profit caps for businesses, limits on how much prices can increase each year, greater control on medical costs (inflation on medical care increase at a rate of between 2 and 4 times greater than the cost of living inflation each year), and encourage the use of birth control rather than limiting it. Then the reduced population will have more money and be happier. Science fiction writers can help create the ideas for the scientists to develop and we can start moving forward again. But it requires doing everything that sends the GOP screaming onto their soap boxes and into their pulpits.
