Insomnia, a nuisance or a way of life….

Posted in Health, Life with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 16, 2014 by urbannight

I know people who say they only need three hours sleep a night and they say they are fine. They get a lot of work done and always have time to clean. Oval bed. There does seem to be a gene linked to people who only need 6 hours of sleep. There is also a very small number of people who are ‘short sleepers’. But even they are 5 – 6 hour sleeps.

“To date, Dr. Jones says he has identified only about 20 true short sleepers, and he says they share some fascinating characteristics. Not only are their circadian rhythms different from most people, so are their moods (very upbeat) and their metabolism (they’re thinner than average, even though sleep deprivation usually raises the risk of obesity). They also seem to have a high tolerance for physical pain and psychological setbacks.”

I’m not so sure about most of them. I think they have adapted to sleep deprivation. I think they really suffer from insomnia and have found a way to make it work for them.

I have not been that lucky. I started having sleep issues when I was 19. I couldn’t fall asleep. Or I couldn’t stay asleep. I never adapted to it. I did spend long hours online researching it in the middle of the night.

One friend calls it ‘busy brain’. Which is true. The first time she said it I knew exactly what she meant. TheVacation Pictures 070 moment you lay down the brain goes into overdrive and will not settle down. But over the years, I’ve found methods to deal with that. I listen to certain sounds, like Rain, Thunderstorms, Ocean, Stream. Gregorian chants. Especially Gregorian chants set to a back ground of a thunder-storm. Some cartoons help as well. Shin Chan, Dexter’s Laboratory, Phineas and Ferb. For some reason, these short, episodic shows really sooth my brain. Each show is 3 or three short, unrelated, segments.

For several years now, I actually have been doing very well and haven’t had bouts of it. But lately the insomnia has come back. I’m blaming the car accident. I seem to have a lot of anxiety when I drive now. As well as when I’m a passenger in a car. Sometimes, when riding with another person, I have to close my eyes. Yet I have to drive more because I’m working a lot of overtime so my roommate and I are driving separately several times a week.

Last night I had zero sleep. None at all. I’ve been up since yesterday morning. I’m on my second cup of coffee and I hate coffee. Day is dragging so slowly.

Ideas While Driving

Posted in Writing with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 21, 2012 by urbannight

I hate the fact that I sometimes work out troubling plot points when driving.  In one case, the major plot point is the plot itself.  I have a great concept I want to work on but I can’t find the right story idea in which to implement this concept.  I’ve been hesitant to reveal too much about it in any type of public forum because it is not something I’ve ever come across.  So it is nice to have a semi-original idea.  (I think there are just to many stories and only so many plots that there is nothing completely original any more.) I say semi-original because I’ve discovered there is a t.v. show that touches on some of the concepts, but not my central one.  At least that part is safe so far.

While driving to work one morning, in the dark, thinking about said t.v. show’s mythology and how it differed from the obvious source material, I finally worked out my plot issue.  I worked out the one piece that helped me settle on a story idea.  The only problem is that something happened in traffic that distracted me and I stopped thinking about it.  Half an hour later, after getting to work, parking in the garage, getting to the office, getting breakfast ready, and sitting down, I realized I forgot it.

That’s the way it works.  I get my best ideas or resolve issues at the worst of times and then can’t remember then when I’m in a place I can do something about them.

Now I’ve spent a couple of days trying to recreate my thought process to find that one ‘hook’ I need again.  By finding that one hook, it pulls up the thread of my construct.  So all the loose threads fall into place and I suddenly have my weft upon which I can start weaving a story.  I NEED that hook.

This is not the first time I’ve gotten ideas or worked out a plot point when on the road.  It seems to be my best thinking time.  But it is really hard to write anything down.  Years and Years ago, I had a recorder to put the ideas into.  But that got lost during a movie in college.  In practice, it really didn’t work out so well.  Probably not a huge loss.  On the other hand, I might have eventually gotten the hang of it.

I guess that’s the way things go sometimes.

Random Thougts at 1:00 am.

Posted in Life with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 18, 2012 by urbannight

I went to be ‘on time’ for a change and am now awake.  So what are the random thoughts of a person at 4:00 am?
I’m really tired of blowing my nose and having chapped nostril edges.  Sniffling, Sneezing, and not Breathing is not conductive to sleep.  Or driving.  Nothing worse than a massive sneezing fit that won’t stop when you are driving.

What’s with all these celebrities having babies.? It is everywhere on the online media.  It’s like the new ‘it’ thing to do.  I don’t see the big deal either.  They all go on like they just did something no one else can do.  Despite the fact that women have been popping out babies since the beginning of time.  It’s so natural that even animals can do it.

I hate pictures of Romney and Ryan and their giant grins. Even from the start, before I know a lot about Romney, he always looked insincere and like he was compensating for something. Much like a used car salesman trying to distract you from the problems with the car using showmanship. Paul Ryan looks like a bully laughing at someone he just sent flying into a pile of poo.  And when they show them together, with those huge, ‘shit eating’ grins, they look like a couple of snake oil salesmen celebrating how much money they scammed from the small town hick’s.

When I want to read a news article, I want to READ it.  I don’t want a video.  I hate video news articles.  I can read the info faster than they can tell it to me.   Don’t waste my time with videos.

I use Firefox on one monitor and Explorer on the other.  I wish it would let me select different home pages for each program.  I would use Yahoo on Firefox and MSN on Explorer.  That way I can get into MSN games and play while doing other stuff on Firefox.  I love playing Jigsaw, but it only gives 3 puzzles at a time.  I wish there was a greater varied of puzzles at all times.  And I finally beat Mahjongg Dimensions. There is only three levels.  That is kind of sad.

I really need to go back to sleep.  My brain isn’t really functioning right now.

Passive Aggressive Driving

Wait, I think it just may be working again.

There was a picture here.  Is anyone else having trouble with graphics not working todoay?)

If I’m at a spot where I can make a right turn on red, and am in fact planning to do just that but someone behind me starts to honk, I admit that I will then wait for the light to officially turn green before making my right turn.

Photos In Motion

We went on an outing today and I was feeling a little silly.  I held up my camera and took photos while zooming along the interstate.  I just randomly clicked on the shutter.  These were the keepers. They aren’t perfect but it isn’t a fancy camera and I was traveling at 70 miles an hour shooting them through glass.

This one is my favorite.

Sometimes it just doesn’t work…..

The sun on the way to work.

The last two mornings had the most amazing view of the sun from the interstate. And it was a huge ball of fluorescent orange color. I figure it must have has something to do with the moisture in the air in the mornings. Or something as I really had no clue and it was to pretty to really care about the mechanics of it. Perhaps I don’t care is less about it being too pretty to analyze and more about me not being a morning person and researching it is too much science for me before 10:00 am.

But I had to drive the last two mornings and wasn’t able to try to get a shot. Today I was riding with my roommate and got my camera ready for ‘Photos while Driving’. Go figure, today would be the one morning with actual clouds. I missed a couple good shoots juggling the stuff he picked up at the drive through. Then I got a lot of really blurry ones. Pictures while moving at 65 miles per hour can do that. Then the sun was too far behind the clouds.

And the incredible red-orange fluorescent color didn’t really come out well on the camera. I’m bummed about that. But I’ll give it another try tomorrow. Maybe there won’t be as many clouds and I’ll get a good, open sky, photo of it.

I can only hope.

Thermonuclear Blast – a conversation

Thermonuclear Blast

Shortly after getting off the Interstate:

Roommate: There is too much traffic for this time in the morning.

ME: I agree

Driving through the parking garage

ME: To many people

Roommate: There is a solution to that.

ME: Thermonuclear blast.

Roommate looks at me.

ME: Not what you had in mind?

Roommate: I was going to say get a job in a small town.

ME: Not even close.

Roommate: Not even in the same Science Fiction family.
