About Sushi, Raspberries and Cameras.

Yesterday I had the most amazing volcano roll for lunch. It seems like every place that serves sushi has a volcano roll but it is different at each establishment. It was also beautifully made. It really wasn’t as fancy as some. It was basically a California roll that was wrapped in thin layers of crab with a more spicy than usual spicy sauce and then sprinkled with some kink of crunchy flakes. It was also just a little bit salty.

I finished off the sushi with a cup of raspberries. They were on sale. Anytime I see them for 2.99 I buy some.  It is what I think of as the ‘normal’ price.  Sometimes the same sized containers can go all the way up to 5.99.  Far to high.

I would loved to take a photo of the delicious and beautiful food but I cannot.  My camera will not charge.  It works perfectly fine when plugged into the wall. This is why the people to whom I took the camera say that it must be a completely dead battery that will no longer take a charge.  Only new batteries, which were very hard to find, also didn’t charge.   I do not have a separate batter charger.  I’m wondering if I should try getting one and seeing if the batteries will charge when charged by an external charger.  Maybe something is wrong with the camera charger and not the batteries.

The only thing is that I’m not that happy with the camera.  It never was as good as my old camera.  But it was the closet one to what I had before.  That camera still worked but the view screen was damaged.  I had the camera in my pocket when I closed the door of the car.  Apparently it crushed something in the viewer.  I could take photos but I could not see what I was taking a photo of.  So I couldn’t see if I was pointing it correctly to get the image I wanted. The repair to that was going to cost as much as the camera was worth.  The part wasn’t terribly expensive but the labor to replace it cost twice as much as the part.

So my mom bought me a new one that was okay but not great.  And now I can’t find batteries for it and it won’t charge properly.  I didn’t think it was that only, only about 4 years.  But everyone else thought that was old for a camera.  Who goes and gets a new camera every year?  It isn’t like an iPod or a smart phone.

According to my roommate, new cameras are released about every 6 months.  His camera was only in production for 3 months and they stopped selling them about 8 months after the initial release date of that model.  So basely a 5-year-old camera would be like a 10-year-old car.

So now I’m thinking that I really want a new camera.  My oldest niece is getting married in June and I want good photos.  So maybe it is time to get a more expensive camera.

The irony is that my all time best camera was a 60$ film camera I picked up at a drug store before going on a vacation many years ago.  Eventually I had problems with the door to the film compartment.  It was my last film camera. I still miss it to this day.  My mom grumbled all through our Hawaii trip one year because my 60$ took better ocean photos than her 300$ camera.  It was funny.

So, until I get a new camera, I’m going to have photo problems with my blogs.  I might have trouble finding the photos I need from my collection of personal photos.

Red is for Rage

Double Double Toil and Trouble

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

Everyone is familiar with the witch’s scene in Macbeth.  At least I like to think everyone knows it.  If they don’t, I feel it is a failure of the educational system.  But that just is not fair.  Students have to take ownership of their own education.

Not that Edumacation (error on purpose) has anything to do with where I am going.

I’m thinking more along the lines of anger and rage.  When the blood boils and the skin feels on fire and you feel like one wrong thing said to you with send you right over the deep end into trouble which often leads to a lot of toil to either repair the damage or to get past it and go on with life, in a new direction.

I was so angry that I worked through my lunch break.  I was so angry that I was afraid if I left my desk I might just take my purse and keep walking until I got to the mystery book store to wait for my roommate to pick me up.  I was so angry that I was starting to see a red border pulsing at the edge of my vision.

Okay, not really, not in the sense I was seeing a real optical illusion.  I’m not going totally mental or having a physiological problem triggered by rage.  It is an allusion to gaming.  When you have a map pop-up open, or a character sheet or anything that covers most of your play area, and you get attacked the edges will start to pulse red in a lot of games.  Sometimes the overlay itself will turn from blue to red.

Double Double Toil and Trouble

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

In a round about way, without knowing dollar figures, I have figured out I’m the lowest paid person on my unit.  And they will be filling two new openings at a higher pay grade than me.  Clerical staff was told that we were going to be reassigned to the appropriate job titles but our pay grades were not going to be changed to reflect the correct pay grade for the job title.  For many people, they have been here a long time and are already above the relevant pay grade.  But I am at a level below what my job is going to become.  And my pay is going to stay at the level below.

This means that everyone, including the new people, will be at a higher rate than me.  Yet I’m the only one who was doing this job prior to this unit being created and I’m the one they always come to when they have problems.  And the claims that no one can figure out get sent to me to set up.  In the yearly evaluation session with the supervisor, she stopped herself when she very nearly said that I could have run this unit.

One of my reasons for rage should be clear, as I have to submit an application for my own job, just so I can move up a pay grade.

What I did when I forgot my book.

Futurecast by Teresa Wentzler

I NEED my mental break at lunch.  I prefer to read a book.  It takes me away from the office and into another world.  This is why I prefer to read Science Fiction or Fantasy novels as well.  But I forgot my book yesterday and instead grabbed the book I had jus finished.    I also forgot my breakfast and lunch in the fridge.  At least I didn’t leave it on the counter.

But I still needed to do SOMETHING at lunch.  I hate being bored during that time.  Being bored on company time is bad enough.  Being bored on my own time is somehow worse.

It’s a good thing I had two stitching projects with me.  The down side is that I normally do something while stitching.  Watch t.v. or a dvd or chat with people.  Not an option in my cube.  (I hate the lunch room.)  So it was still a little tedious.

I worked on this little dragon.  Maybe I’ll finish it soon and can post a picture of it completed.

I also need to update my Tardis Project.  I have two items finished.  In the stitching world there is something we call finished but not finished.  The stitching is done but it hasn’t been turned into anything yet.  I also made a good bit of progress on my Elegant Pumpkins.  I’m still having trouble tracking down two of the colors.  Once I get those photographed, I’ll be posting that update.

But in the meantime, here is a sample of the little dragon.  The pattern is called Futurecast and it is by Teresa Wentzler.  A lot of people hate Wentzler patterns because they tend to be ‘advanced’.  They make massive use of blending two different colors and they use tons of partial cross stitches.

This is a free pattern on her website.  It is designed so the stitcher can easily alter the color scheme to whatever he or she wants.  I’m not blending two colors for every symbol.  I’m just using one.  So there is a little less subtlety.  I may do so if I stitch it again.  It’s not too big and the ease of swapping colors makes it a great pattern for stitching gifts.  It is a good introduction on how to change colors on patterns and the partial stitches are kept to a minimum so it is also a good introduction to Teresa Wentzler patterns in general.

Who Needs a Pina Colada? I DO!

I’m tired and grumpy, hence the lack of pictures.

I got to my gaming group last night late.  There was an accident blocking a road and I had to take a detour that let me into an area I didn’t know I it took longer to get back to a road I did know.

The upside is that I got the pleasure of killing another boss.  Only after they sat and discussed coup de gras.  Only I thought they were talking about another person’s turn and kind of tuned out.  What they really wanted was to scrap what I had just done and do a coup de gras.  Since I’ve not had an opportunity to do any crit rolls, they then had to explain exactly what I needed to do.  All I really wanted them to tell me is which dice to roll and how many times and when to add the modifier.  I didn’t need the long version.  I have to admit, I was really trying to stay awake.  I was really sleepy when I got there.

Of course, the Pally was a bit miffed (not really) because now we couldn’t question the insane priest.  But hey, what do you expect from a Chaotic Evil warrior with an axe to grind.  Literally, I was using a great axe.   And the priest killed my neutral ranger friend who was all for burning down the town as I was.  I kept the head by the way.  A girl needs her trophies.

So we ran right up to the stop time and there was another accident blocking my route on the way home.  Only this was worse.  Well, I don’t know about the accident but the dead ends were.  It was a housing development that went in a while back. Then the recession hit.  So there were lots of empty lots and lots of roads that just stopped.  So I got home late.

I want more sleep.  And then various things made me cranky today.  Sanctuary was cancelled.  I expected that.  The last episode makes me think the writers did too.  As we find out that Magnus spend her 150 ish long ‘vacation’ building a secret, underground, hidden sanctuary.  The end echoed lines from the first episode.  As a series finally, it was not very satisfying.  The overall feeling was they were making a season finale that could double as a series finale if they didn’t get picked up again.

I tried to use the feedback link on SyFy’s own website.  It doesn’t work.  It bounced back as undeliverable.

Why are you alienating and driving off the science fiction fans whom you would think were your target audience.  Years ago, “SciFi” was a fairly bad station that seemed to mostly air someone’s old collection of sci-fi and B-movies.

Then, the station pulled itself up by its bootstraps, got it together, and started offering great science fiction shows.  But you have a history of cancelling shows, often without warning, so the writers are not able to write a finale to tie up the show.  Usually, you cancel the shows at the height of their popularity.

Now you are bringing on all sorts of reality shows, wrestling (which no one has been able to understand why you added it in the first place), and a mish mash of other things other than scripted science fiction.

You are going the way of M-TV.  You should change your name again to reflect the fact you are no longer providing programming for the science fiction fans.

That is what I tried sending them.

Then I had a banquet lunch.  Swedish Meatballs.  The dish on the box looks very good.  The sauce did not look like the sauce on the box.  It was not good.  I was very sad.  I wanted what was advertised and not the crap they actually put in the box.

Now I want to go home.  I brought a change so I can stop at the fitness center on the way up the hill to the apartment.  Then I have to clean of the dinning room table.  I have an episode of Bones to watch.  I need to clear off the coffee table too.  I should put away the laundry and make the bed.  Then clean off the dressers and end tables.  I have “Flat Surfaceitis”.  This is the need to put things on flat surfaces.

What I really want to do is take a hot bath, have a pina colada, and play some SWTOR.

Random Lunch-Time Update

I shall have to clock back in from lunch soon so I shall type a few sentences to share.

Due to a technical difficulty, I can’t post pictures for an update on the TARDIS project, the pumpkin project, the yarn projects, and various other projects. (I left the cord in another bag)

I did use most of lunch to try to catch up with all the blogs I follow.  I’ve gotten a bit behind.

News articles left me feeling more misanthropic and politically annoyed than usual and I may rant about it at another time.  If I remember.

Half a dose of Pain Killer PM is enough to make you drowsy enough to sleep through alarms but is not enough pain killer to make a pulled muscle and headache go away quickly.  I’m pretty sure it was the cat’s fault.

Coffee taste never lives up to smell and it takes 14 creamers and 10 sugars to make it at least drinkable.

Why do people think their claims can be handled within three hours of being turned in?  In an age when 3 minutes in a microwave is too long to wait everything must get done instantly.  Right?

I’m rereading too many of my Terry Pratchett books.  I found myself writing about ‘punnes’, you know, plays on words.

I have a large stack of fantasy, mystery, sci-fi novels to read and I keep buying more, but they just seem to dark and I’m not in the mood for dark.  So I keep rereading the lighter, amusing stuff I already own.

Time may be up now.

Minor Note on Couscous

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on March 23, 2012 by urbannight

It is far too tasty.

I had a reasonable breakfast and lunch and make 2 servings of almonds last the entire work day as snacks.  Then I went home and made dinner.

And killed my diet.  I normally get to meals out of some couscous and chicken.  But it was so delicious that a short while after I ate my dinner, I went and got the half I set aside for todays lunch and ate it too.

So much for portion control yesterday.  Today, the only day I didn’t drive, was also the only day I didn’t have anything for lunch.  I ordered cheesy garlic bread delivered.  Now I really want to sleep.

45 minutes of work

If this is 45 minutes of work, I wonder how many lunch hours it would take to finish?
