About Sushi, Raspberries and Cameras.

Yesterday I had the most amazing volcano roll for lunch. It seems like every place that serves sushi has a volcano roll but it is different at each establishment. It was also beautifully made. It really wasn’t as fancy as some. It was basically a California roll that was wrapped in thin layers of crab with a more spicy than usual spicy sauce and then sprinkled with some kink of crunchy flakes. It was also just a little bit salty.

I finished off the sushi with a cup of raspberries. They were on sale. Anytime I see them for 2.99 I buy some.  It is what I think of as the ‘normal’ price.  Sometimes the same sized containers can go all the way up to 5.99.  Far to high.

I would loved to take a photo of the delicious and beautiful food but I cannot.  My camera will not charge.  It works perfectly fine when plugged into the wall. This is why the people to whom I took the camera say that it must be a completely dead battery that will no longer take a charge.  Only new batteries, which were very hard to find, also didn’t charge.   I do not have a separate batter charger.  I’m wondering if I should try getting one and seeing if the batteries will charge when charged by an external charger.  Maybe something is wrong with the camera charger and not the batteries.

The only thing is that I’m not that happy with the camera.  It never was as good as my old camera.  But it was the closet one to what I had before.  That camera still worked but the view screen was damaged.  I had the camera in my pocket when I closed the door of the car.  Apparently it crushed something in the viewer.  I could take photos but I could not see what I was taking a photo of.  So I couldn’t see if I was pointing it correctly to get the image I wanted. The repair to that was going to cost as much as the camera was worth.  The part wasn’t terribly expensive but the labor to replace it cost twice as much as the part.

So my mom bought me a new one that was okay but not great.  And now I can’t find batteries for it and it won’t charge properly.  I didn’t think it was that only, only about 4 years.  But everyone else thought that was old for a camera.  Who goes and gets a new camera every year?  It isn’t like an iPod or a smart phone.

According to my roommate, new cameras are released about every 6 months.  His camera was only in production for 3 months and they stopped selling them about 8 months after the initial release date of that model.  So basely a 5-year-old camera would be like a 10-year-old car.

So now I’m thinking that I really want a new camera.  My oldest niece is getting married in June and I want good photos.  So maybe it is time to get a more expensive camera.

The irony is that my all time best camera was a 60$ film camera I picked up at a drug store before going on a vacation many years ago.  Eventually I had problems with the door to the film compartment.  It was my last film camera. I still miss it to this day.  My mom grumbled all through our Hawaii trip one year because my 60$ took better ocean photos than her 300$ camera.  It was funny.

So, until I get a new camera, I’m going to have photo problems with my blogs.  I might have trouble finding the photos I need from my collection of personal photos.

Insomnia, a nuisance or a way of life….

Posted in Health, Life with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 16, 2014 by urbannight

I know people who say they only need three hours sleep a night and they say they are fine. They get a lot of work done and always have time to clean. Oval bed. There does seem to be a gene linked to people who only need 6 hours of sleep. There is also a very small number of people who are ‘short sleepers’. But even they are 5 – 6 hour sleeps.

“To date, Dr. Jones says he has identified only about 20 true short sleepers, and he says they share some fascinating characteristics. Not only are their circadian rhythms different from most people, so are their moods (very upbeat) and their metabolism (they’re thinner than average, even though sleep deprivation usually raises the risk of obesity). They also seem to have a high tolerance for physical pain and psychological setbacks.”

I’m not so sure about most of them. I think they have adapted to sleep deprivation. I think they really suffer from insomnia and have found a way to make it work for them.

I have not been that lucky. I started having sleep issues when I was 19. I couldn’t fall asleep. Or I couldn’t stay asleep. I never adapted to it. I did spend long hours online researching it in the middle of the night.

One friend calls it ‘busy brain’. Which is true. The first time she said it I knew exactly what she meant. TheVacation Pictures 070 moment you lay down the brain goes into overdrive and will not settle down. But over the years, I’ve found methods to deal with that. I listen to certain sounds, like Rain, Thunderstorms, Ocean, Stream. Gregorian chants. Especially Gregorian chants set to a back ground of a thunder-storm. Some cartoons help as well. Shin Chan, Dexter’s Laboratory, Phineas and Ferb. For some reason, these short, episodic shows really sooth my brain. Each show is 3 or three short, unrelated, segments.

For several years now, I actually have been doing very well and haven’t had bouts of it. But lately the insomnia has come back. I’m blaming the car accident. I seem to have a lot of anxiety when I drive now. As well as when I’m a passenger in a car. Sometimes, when riding with another person, I have to close my eyes. Yet I have to drive more because I’m working a lot of overtime so my roommate and I are driving separately several times a week.

Last night I had zero sleep. None at all. I’ve been up since yesterday morning. I’m on my second cup of coffee and I hate coffee. Day is dragging so slowly.

Fazoli’s FAIL!

I generally do not like Fazoli’s. But I was tired and in a lot of pain so, when Jeff went  through the drive through, I decided to get the Classic Caesar salad. It said it had chicken on it. I get home. No chicken. I look it up online. The description is as follows:

Classic Caesar
Chopped Romaine Lettuce with Roasted Chicken and Creamy Caesar.

There is no chicken on it. I called and complained. They are supposed to be sending me a coupon. I hope it is a free meal. Or a free salad. Since I don’t like any of their sauces or their pizza.

Almost an hour later, my roommate comes over with his meal. He ate the bread sticks and pizza ‘side’ first and waited a bit for the rest. He asked me to pick the chicken off his pasta sampler.  He has problems with chicken.  You know, like some people have digestive issues with pork.  So he doesn’t eat chicken.

The chicken, only on the top, was chopped up pieces and the correct portion size for a salad. Gee, I think we found the chicken. Only it had sauce touching the bottom half of all the pieces. And we know how I feel about their sauces.  Not to mention, my salad, that was a total rip off without the chicken, was already gone.

The Chili Diaries

Posted in Entertainment, Food with tags , , , , , , , , on December 1, 2012 by urbannight

Earlier this week:

I was sitting on the couch, pretending to stitch, I was feeling pretty poorly and just didn’t have the energy.  My roommate comes out of the computer room and sits down in his recliner, looking at me expectantly.  I wasn’t sure what he was up to.  It was definitely an I’m-up-to-something look though.  You never know where those are going to go.

Do you make chili? – Him

Now I had made my spicy beef soup earlier.  At first I thought I mis-heard him.

No, oh, wait, do you mean can I make chili? – Me.

He nods his head.  At this point, I feel like I’m having a conversation with a kid.

Yeah, I make chili.  I haven’t done so in a while. – Me

What do you put in it? – Him

Wow, a whole sentence.

Beef, Kidney Beans, Tomato Sauce and Chili powder. – Me

He didn’t say anything.  He just sat there looking expectantly. Still.

Do you want me to make chili? – Me

Chili dogs – Him as he nods his head.

It feels even more like a conversation with a child.

Needless to say, this is why I am now making chili tonight.  He bought the ingredients so I can cook it so he can have chili dogs.

Oh, that’s the bbq sauce they used……

I would have rather had this.

I had a serious shock to my system tonight.  I was planning to make a hamburger patty and a potato for dinner.  When I got home, the roommate asked if I was going to eat that leftover pizza for dinner.  I said no, it has pineapple on it.

Ten minutes later, I come back to the room w/ two slices of this very thin crust pizza on a plate.  I changed my mind when faced with having to cook rather than reheat something fast and easy.  Even if I don’t like cooked pineapple.

I bit in to it.  I made a face.  I looked at it and wondered what they did to it.  It tasted like they covered the crust with sugar before putting on the toppings.  I think I said it out loud because my roommate replied to me.

“No, they wouldn’t do that,” he said.

“Well, it is really really sweet.”

“Oh, that’s the bbq sauce they used…..”

Who puts bbq sauce on a pizza?  I am not eating the last two slices.

Of Bedtime Rituals, Beta Tests, and Ass Dancing.

I wanted to make this more general and less about me. But it is too much about me and I couldn’t keep it to a minimum. I blame it on sleep deprivation. If you want to know about it, or you just want to get to the part about ass dancing, read on.

It seems like today will be a very long day. I’m exhausted and back, shoulder, wrist, hand and ankles hurt. I feel like I spent an entire weekend gaming but it was exactly opposite of that.

My roommate preordered Guild Wars 2. This weekend was the beta event. But it took more of the weekend to download than he had left to play. He stared it Friday and it wasn’t finished until Sunday morning. Paying for a fast download speed is irrelevant if the server it comes from is sending at a slower rate and is very busy. This meant I couldn’t do any online games, WordPress would never load, and my email, home page, and FB loaded very slowly. Online stuff was out of the question. So was Netflix.

So I treated myself to a Firefly marathon Saturday. I also got a lot of stitching done. I got a lot done but didn’t quite make it to Serenity. Really great progress was made on the Elegant Pumpkins. Normally, stitching does not produce the same type of hand and wrist fatigue as gaming all day does. My my hand and wrist feel awful. Right up into my shoulder.

Which reminds me of something. Isn’t it odd how in formal writing we object to the incomplete sentence. But it is very common in novel-writing. And in natural speech. We say something, stop, and then add something to clarify. In writing, one sentence might give the impression that there was no pause or only a slight pause. But the reality of natural speech is that it is often a much longer pause. And novel-writing tends to reflect a more natural mode of speech than formal writing. We want people to really feel as if they are seeing and hearing the novel rather than reading it. Show us don’t tell us.

So, my weekend was a marathon of television and stitchery and not much of anything else.  Although I did play two hours of the Beta Test before bed. Not something I planned on. But it was going to end and there is still no release date for the game. So I figured if I was going to try it out, that was the only time to do it. Still, it wasn’t enough of a gaming stretch to bother my joints. At least, it shouldn’t have been.

Instead of getting ready for bed and relaxing at 9:00 I didn’t get started on that until 11:00. My normal routine is to get ready for bed and lay down on the couch and watch a cartoon. In the past, this was not an effective ritual. At the time, I was staying up later than my already late bed time so I could watch an hour and a half of Disney Channel Cartoons. Emperor’s New School, Replacements, and Kim Possible. These were great cartoons but boy were they on late at night. Saying up until 1:30 am is not an effective bedtime ritual.

After they canceled them, I tried to find some online versions of them. I discovered a good reason not to make a teenage cartoon for middle school kids or younger too sexy. There is a massive amount of Kim Possible porn out there.

But I did find a show that worked great for helping me relax and I almost always fall asleep during. Not because it is boring but simply because I’ve seen the show SO MANY times. Shin Chan. It is amusing, entertaining, short, mostly light, and once you know the show by heart, easy to unwind during and fall asleep with it in the background. Eventually, I watched it SO many times I wanted a bit of a break. Invader Zim is not so go for unwinding and falling asleep. But Phineas and Ferb is fantastic. The show is cute, the characters interesting, the format is always the same, each episode is two separate segments.

It is perfect for slowing the brain down to sleepy time levels and drifting off in the middle of the program. I wake up later, momentarily, to stumble into bed and fall asleep before I know it, with none of the tossing and turning that normally happens. Like on Friday and Saturday when I didn’t have my bed time cartoons available.

Recently, my roommate saw that I wasn’t watching Shin Chan anymore and asked my why. I told him I needed a little variation and P & F worked just as well. He said I must be waiting for Ferb to drop his drawers and ass dance. No, I’m not. He seems to thing that is the entire purpose of my watching Shin Chan. This is not true. It is amusing. But I don’t watch it for that. Although the episode totally devoted to butt cheeks is one of the best episodes.

Mitzy buys some dolphin goo for her face. Shin happened to see the commercial for it when he was at home while she was out shopping. He overhears a conversation between Mitzy and the neighbor lady and totally misunderstands. He thinks his mom is planning to use Hima’s (his little sister) skin to replace her own skin so she will look 5 years younger and have the skin of a baby. He and Hima then have an ass dance dance-off in which Hima can’t keep up but she wins because her butt skin glows and shines with divine baby light. Shin sees the bag for the dolphin goo and recognizes it and remembers that the commercial says it will take 5 years off. Since he is 5, he will have the skin of a baby too. He can save Hima. Mitzy walks into her room to see Shin in front of a vanity pouring the last of the entire bottle of lotion on his butt. It is very very funny. I’m not sure my description does it justice.

Which brings me back to last night, where I lay down at 11:10, put on a 20 mintue episode of Phineas and Ferb, both of whom are too smart to find ass dancing a good use of their summer vacation. I drift of to sleep. Then I half wake up and go to bed. I wake all the way up at 2:00 am and can’t sleep. I end up being up until 4:30. I want to run screaming out onto the balcony, ripping at my night-shirt, yelling,”WHY? WHY?”, Marlon Brando style, which would look a little funny coming from me. I’ve been working really hard getting myself to go to bed earlier and get eight hours of sleep at night. Instead I had a 3 hour nap, was up for 2.5 hours, and then got another 1hr 45 mintutes of sleep.

I was glad this wasn’t a Monday where I had to drive to work. I wasn’t sure I was awake enough for driving. I was really looking forward to a good hour to 90 minute nap after work before gaming. But now I have to go do some emergency dog siting for a couple of hours after work as the one owner is out-of-town on an emergency and the other owner had finals and couldn’t get home between work and classes.

I’m glad I stopped at the gas station to pick up Rooster Booster slushy and two 5 hour energy shots. I just may survive today after all. Hey, where’s Perry?
