Quietly Freaking Out

Posted in Apartments, Life with tags , , , , , , on March 21, 2013 by urbannight

One of my cats will jump up on my roommate’s desk and push stuff off to get my attention sometimes. Only when he isn’t at the desk.

So I went to move the cat off the desk and noticed that he had the name and number of the moving company on a sticky note on his computer. A moving company he doesn’t need for 5 months?

I’m freaking out that he is suddenly going to announce, or not even mention, when he plans to move. It was originally after classes ended in mid-August. So September at the soonest. But he is acting weird about it again.

I’m going to stop by the office after work to talk about getting into a one bedroom but my biggest fear is that I’m going to say my roommate is talking about moving in mid to late summer and they are going to tell me he gave notice for this month or next month or something like that

One of THOSE days . . . .

At 8:32 am I’m resorting to a cup of coffee. I hate coffee. I’m that desperate. I’m unbelievably sleepy today.

It doesn’t help that we are expecting a major snow storm this afternoon. Half the people are walking around talking about leaving early. Schools closed preemptively. Despite the fact that the heavy show has been pushed back until 2:00 today. The light flurries have been pushed back until after the noon hour. The Winter Storm Warning has been pushed back to noon Thursday through noon Friday from 6:00 am on the aforementioned days.

Other schools were a bit smarter and are having half days. But maybe the whole day is better. Is it harder for working parents to deal with the whole day or the half day? I don’t know.

Anyway, I think it is going to be one of THOSE days.

There is a group of mostly clerical staff, with a couple of professional members, that seem to think it is a party day. In fact, they spent half an hour being loud yesterday and have already started today.

This is a point of contention. My unit is always getting complaints that we are too loud. But we are the phone unit. We are taking incoming calls to report losses or check up on claims all day long. We have to spend all day talking. It is our job.

These people are not phone people. They do have some phone tasks, a few are lunch time backups. Their loudness does not come from any phone work. It is coming from half hour long chatty breaks.

These built-up, over-sensasionalized storm days result in people talking all day and not working. Part of the staff is leaving at half day to get home before the storm hits. Several people said they would just take the day off. That means the rest of us will most likely have to stay until the bitter end.

I could also do without the dire build up on how awful the day is going to be, weather-wise, and the build up of hope for office closures, but then the weather ends up getting pushed back so that it only affects the drive home, if it even hits that early. These storms usually get pushed back to the evenings. It ends up being both a distraction and a let down.

Top it all off, there was some major guild drama and a lot of high-ranking, highly involved guild officers split from the leadership and quit the guild.

My raid leader started his own guild. Part of my team is still in the old one and part in the new one. Some of the guild officers left and joined his guild.

You see, the man who originated the guild, 8 years ago, (it is a massive organization crossing many games and servers and not like any other guild I’ve ever seen) wrote a letter and put it on the forums in which he stated whom he wanted to be his officers and why and went so far as to actually insult and threaten some of the very people he wanted to keep. Which is why some of the people he wanted ended up quitting.

He wrote stuff that totally went against everything he has said the guild stands for in every single guild meeting I’ve been to. It sounded so different from him that some people had originally thought someone might have hacked him or somehow gotten into his account. It also sounded very much like drunk ranting. But no, turned out he sent a draft of the letter to a senior officer who verified that this was the actual guild leader’s words.

I ended up staying late to read this letter and all the responses to it and the letters from the senior officers who found the entire thing distasteful enough to decide they had to leave the guild.

The result is that I am very tired today. I didn’t get enough sleep. I had to drive because my roommate normally has class on this night. When I asked about his classes getting canceled he turned the entire thing in to an argument and an exercise in semantics that I decided he just didn’t want to go in to work together. When I ran into him at work, he said he went to tell me that he did NOT have classes but I had already left. I was tired and hungry and not in the mode to play games. So yeah, I left so I could get to work early enough to get breakfast.

Now I’m sitting here, drinking nasty coffee, drinking Pepsi, trying to get rid of a headache, and trying to stay awake while working on various tasks. I can’t keep my eyes open and it is going to be a LONG day.

Hidden Goodness in Canceled Plans:

This has NOTHING to do with the post. It is just a great fantasy, day dream, fantasy concept floating around Facebook. I may turn it into a stitch pattern.

What today looked like:
1. Get up 1.5 hours early to go to work early.
2. Forget to take all medicine before leaving.
3. Lose phone so you can’t call roommate and ask him to bring them to work.
4. Dental appointment and get the first half of a root canal done.
5. Find the missing phone.
6. Be hungry but have no desire to eat once the dentist stuff wears off.
7. Spend rest of the work day in pain w/ headache.
8. Game night gets canceled.
This is hidden goodness disguised as much sadness. It means I could get home, take blood pressure meds, take pain meds, and I can go to bed early so I can have a better day tomorrow.

An Evening to Myself

Posted in Apartments, Life, Uncategorized, Work with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 8, 2012 by urbannight

My roommate starts classes tonight.  He won’t be home until 10:30ish.  I find myself looking forward to it.  I can do some cleaning I have gotten behind on.  There are certain chores I can’t bring myself to do if there are people around.  Vacuuming is one.

I believe this goes back to childhood.  My entire family helps make holiday dinners but never more than one person in the kitchen at a time.  We don’t clean or cook well together.  Someone is always trying to ‘fix’ the way someone else does things.

My sister and I were okay to clean together.  In fact, after school on Wednesday and Friday’s, we would clean the entire house.  That way our parent’s couldn’t say no when we asked for spending money to go skating or to the movies.  This is what we did instead of getting an allowance.  It worked for us.

During college, If my folks went out of town on the weekends, I would then clean the house while they were gone.  That way I felt like I was doing my part and I wouldn’t have to listen to someone telling me I was pushing a vacuum cleaner wrong or that I ought to dust a different way.

When I had a house w/ a yard, I tried to wait for weird times to do yard work.  I hated doing it on Saturday or Sunday when everyone else was also doing it.  I hated the feeling that people were watching me and judging how I was doing.  Drove me nuts.  I’ll be happy never to have to do yard work again.  I decided renting is better than owning.  If something needs fixing, you call maintenance.

As my roommate hasn’t gone to do a few of his other things lately, I’ve gotten behind on a few chores I normally handle.  So I’m looking forward to Tuesday and Thursday evenings now.  I’ll get the carpets and floors caught up and kept up.  And it will be nice to get my bathroom done, top to bottom. Maybe I’ll get really ambitious one day and take the stove apart to clean the trays under it and clean the oven out.  But not tonight.

I think I’ll just ease back into it again and take care of the carpet and floors and clean cat hair from the sofa.

Some odd days of moving

If you cannot tell, I am too tired to do the math. I’m beat. My feet are killing me. I only moved 6 boxes, so it wasn’t activity that is making my feet scream. It is the shoes I wore. I’m starting this with shoes.

About a year ago I stopped wearing anything other than tennis shoes to work. Lately, someone at work has made me her personal vendetta. We are not supposed to wear tennis shoes to work. But any other type of shoe seems to cause me the bottom of my heel extreme pain and my right hip to hurt and by the time I get home I’m limping. A good quality tennis shoe has proper arch support and proper soles and I can find adult shoes in my size. I don’t have these types of pain when I wear them.

Why is this an issue? I have very small feet. When it comes to work suitable shoes, they are not made in my size. I have to do most of my shoe shopping in the children’s section. Children’s shoes are not designed for adult bodies on top of those small feet. I also need to lose weight. When I weight no more than a child would it wasn’t so bad. (I graduated high school at 96 – 98 lbs).

I COULD buy expensive specialty shoes for adult women in very small sizes. But as a clerical worker, they don’t pay me enough. If I have to spend more money on shoes, I want shoes that I can work out in and do other active stuff in. Not just wear to work or to dinner.

My solution is to go into the doctor’s tomorrow. They are open half a day on a first come first serve basis on Saturday. I will get a note from the doctor to wear tennis shoes. Other people at work have done it. It just seems silly to have to spend money on a doctor to get a note to let me fix a problem I was able to fix on my own.

Back to the moving. Today was my new roommate’s entire move. Got up 1.5 hours earlier than normal. Got my car from a few blocks away and parked in front of the building. Put 6 boxes in it. Stopped at store for toilet paper and laundry detergent. Got to the apartment half an hour too early. Office Max or Depot was very close. It seemed like a good place to kill a little time.

They were having a SALE! I’ve been wanting to replace my computer desk. Perfect timing. I could take it straight to the new apartment. But not then. Not with a car full of boxes.

Got back, signed my half of the lease paper work, got my keys, and started to unload. Remember, I only have 6 boxes. And at this point, I only got one box and one bag in. So this is no big deal. Of course, I have to let in his movers. They were late to his place because of a semi-accident. Then they arrive and he was delayed be of another semi-accident. It’s been raining all night and all day. It’s supposed to continue all night and possibly turn to snow.

Snow in mid-April.

His movers unload and it didn’t take long. We do the check-list, turn it in, and go to lunch. At this point, my feet are in serious pain. And I’ve done very little walking around. Admittedly, I didn’t wear the right shoes for moving. That’s because a puddle soaked my good tennis shoes early in the morning. Since I didn’t really do much I decided that getting a doctor’s note was the best thing.

We run a couple of errands and pick up my new desk. Then we waited for Cox to come hook up the internet. This is when I got the other 5 boxes.

We discussed options for running two computers and two Wii’s. One one for the t.v. in the computer room and one for the t.v. in the living room. In fact, we got the router from the Cox guy. He actually left the router with us and told us how to set it up. Only once it is hooked up, the internet no longer worked. Removing the router from the equation left the same problem. It would say the computer was connected to the internet but was not responding. Installing the router wiped out the computers Cox information so the service wasn’t recognizing his computer.

I left for the old apartment and he got ready to call Cox and get things working again.

According to a call I just got, the problem was on Cox’s end. When the Cox tech called in from the apartment to do the transfer of service, the person on the other end didn’t do it right. As a result, Cox could not identify him anymore. Even though it was fine before the Cox tech fiddled with things.

Now I am tired, my feet and right hip hurt. I limped and hobbled around like a 90-year-old while I looked for my ringing cell phone. It was probably funny to see. Me in my black tee-shirt and my animal print panties tripping over a cat.

I’ve watched episode 5, season 1 of MI-5 and I’m off to a hot bubble bath with a Terry Pratchett book. Tomorrow I shall try to pack up 10 boxes and Sunday I’ll put as many as possible in the car and take them to the new place. With my proper tennis shoes.

43 Days. A Moving Experience

43 Days until I want to move all my furniture. Is it to early to start writing about moving?

I’ve spent the past two weeks teasing myself with the floor plan. I’m so eager to be moved already.

I want to move on the third weekend in May. I have 6 weekends before then. Trying to organize packing this far out is a terrible challenge. It is hard to focus on specific areas.

My roommate is moving in next weekend. I am taking the day off because I’ve been informed that I get the job of directing the placement of his furniture in all the public rooms and he doesn’t care where the kitchen stuff goes just so long as he can find it.

I think I may finally have a plan for my stuff. Start with books and clothes. Pack the boxes I have and try to set aside a box each for donations. (I’ve gone through one of 10 book cases and only come up with 6 books to donate!)

The goal is to get rid of the two smaller brown bookcases that really are not in very good shape. So I really ought to try to weed out that many books. I will pack away winter clothes and costuming stuff. Of the three boxes of too small clothes I couldn’t part with 3 years ago, I’ll sort through and ONLY keep a few items as motivators. I’m moving with a friend who has an elliptical and the apartment has a really nice fitness center.

Of the clothes currently in the dressers and closet, I ought to try to weed out a good portion. Since I’m moving, it’s really a good time to break down and get rid of some of the beloved pieces that got an oil stain that would never come out, or mystery washing machine stains that were not there before loading into the washer. Since I’ll be saving every month, I should just start refreshing my wardrobe by one item a month. So I should purge it ahead of time.

Next will be my scrapbooking stuff and hobby stuff. (non-stitching) Not a lot of weeding to do in that stuff. But it is also stuff that I can easily not use before the move.

Weekend three should belong to organizing, sorting, and packing most of my computer and electronic stuff and returning the Cox Digital box to them. I will probably not going to have cable again. It is just too expensive anymore. And SyFy shows my programs on SyFy Rewind. So I can watch them eventually. I mostly use Hulu and Netflix at 1/8th the cost of my cable bill.

Weekend four is getting closer to move date so I can really start packing up the majority of kitchen and bathroom stuff. At this point I’ll start taking my boxes over as well. I can get my bathroom set up and half my clothes in my bedroom closets and start getting stuff organized. Maybe I’ll get a new computer desk and set it up over there ahead of time and when I move my computer at the end, I’ll put the sewing/computer desk in the storage closet. It collapses flat. I also want to get rid of the extra dresser I use for storage and the computer des I’m currently using. Move it to the previously mentioned sewing desk during this packing stage.

Weekend 5 will see to the packing and organizing of my very important stitching stuff and anything else I want to see handled with great care. And moving more boxes. I still need to find someone who can remove my defunct treadmill.

This brings me to Weekend 6. The last weekend before the big move. I’ll leave myself with basic bathroom and kitchen stuff. One week of clothing. Get everything moved over except the BIG stuff. And take over empty drawers from the dressers so it is easier to move them.

That leave 4 piece bedroom set. One small table with 4 chairs. 8 bookcases some only 3 feet some up to 6 feet. One entertainment center. One flat screen t.v. and one regular t.v. One sewing/computer table. One hope chest. One rocking chair. And my computer.

My biggest concern is finding people to help me move. Movers will cost a minimum of 200 dollars for a minimum of two hours. Not sure I can afford that, but I could try. If it went over 2 hours then it would be a real problem. Maybe I can move all the short book cases myself. (I’m doing the computer myself.) The end table I could possibly do. Not sure the collapsible sewing/computer table will fit in my car. But I could try it. I could probably get the 4 chairs in my car at one time. And the bedroom TV.

If I managed that it brings the stuff to move down to Bed-frame, Mattresses, Dresser w/ mirror, Tall Dresser, Table, Entertainment center, Flat screen TV, 4 or 5 Bookcases, Hope Chest, Rocking Chair, and maybe the sewing table.

Renting a U-haul is so much more affordable, but if I can’t find muscle to help me move (for the price of beer and pizza) it doesn’t’ do me much good.

I have to make that decision in the next two weeks so I can get it set up. That is the only thing I don’t have much time left on to make that choice.

The last two weekends in May will be for moving anything I didn’t get moved already and getting a professional carpet cleaner in and for doing the rest of the cleaning on my own. I do own my own carpet cleaner. But it doesn’t do the greatest job. Not when trying to clean up an entire carpeted area.

On the whole, I wish I could start taking over stuff this instant. I’m to eager to be in the new setting, in a lovely apartment, with a nice gym, no longer having to park on the street, no longer having to run the dishwasher to get the water hot enough for a hot bath, and saving some money each month.

Just writing this feels like a huge tease on myself.
