After walking home after voting.

This morning I feel numb and horrified at the same time.  There were almost no people walking in to work this morning.  Did people take the day off?  Are there as many people in this country who feel as if they are walking through some post-apocalyptic world despite the fact that the sun is shining, the world looks the same, and half the country is actually happy?

I will probably scream if people start talking about a mandate.  I didn’t like it when Obama said it.  No election as close as these represent a mandate.  I would only accept that word in a landslide vote.  This was not a landslide.  My radio was on when I turned on my car.  I had to turn it off.  People were calling in and saying America has spoken.  As if it was a huge percentage.  It was a razor thin edge.  The worst sorts of people came out of the woodwork.  People who wanted change at ANY cost and don’t care if it hurt this country.  They just want to ‘break’ Washington.

I might have supported and even applauded Trump if he hadn’t approached this on a platform of hate, fear, distrust, and violence.  I have actually thought something did need to break the Washington Machine for it to ever change.  But this was the worst way it could have happened.  There was a tiny, secret part of me that actually thought that maybe he should win and people will get what they deserved and I hoped they would then regret what they did.  But I refused to ever say it.  I didn’t want to do anything to put any of that energy out into the world.  I didn’t really think he would win.

Congratulations to half of this country.  Your man won.  It just goes to show the country hasn’t progressed as far as we thought.  People who want to keep black people, Hispanics, Jewish people, Muslims, and women down so that they can continue to feel better about themselves have won.  People who feel that with the rise of all the people listed above that they have lost their power and that they need to take it back have won.  People who represent the lowest and worst of this country have won.  People with hate in their hearts have won.  People who think women are lower themselves and that women should have no control over their own bodies have won.  People who think men don’t need to control their own reactions and that women should be controlled in order to ‘protect them’ from the things they have been given the ‘go-ahead’ to do because ‘boys will be boys’ have won.

How is it that people who complain that Hilary is one of the ‘one percent’ have bought into the idea that Trump is not?  Trump came from money, always had money, borrowed a huge amount from his daddy to get his business started, and yet people think he knows what it is like to have to work his way up.  He never did.  He is a silver spoon baby and never knew what it was like to need money.   We don’t really know what he is worth because he wouldn’t provide his tax returns.  He did admit to finding enough loop holes to not pay any taxes for 13 years or something like that.  But he says he is worth a LOT but at the same time cheats his contractors and vendors by telling them thinks like, “we don’t have the money to pay you, we can only pay you 70 cents on the dollar.  You better take it because if you take it to court, you will probably win, but we can make it take so long that you will lose everything and go broke before you ever win.”

How is it that people will believe that a man who likes having portions of his companies overseas because he can pay the workers FAR less than he can in the United State will ever do anything to bring jobs back to the U.S.  He seems to think that he is some type of Roosevelt character who just has to build enough roads and bridges to put people back to work.  Roadwork goes on all year round here.  The roads are constantly being repaired.  Roadwork never stops.  Sure, many bridges are in a state where they need to be repaired.  But that was discovered years ago and most of those are in the process of being fixed all around this country.  He also implied that the problem with education is that we need more schools and he promised to build more schools and more hospitals.  We have enough schools and if you count Emergicare offices, we have facilities.  Building more isn’t going to solve the problems.  Repealing Obamacare isn’t going to help lower medical costs.  These issues are far deeper.  We need to pay teachers better; we need to make sure existing schools are supplied with the tools needed to teach kids.  We need to value students more as well.  Parents need to take more responsibility over their children’s behavior and student’s need to take more ownership of their own learning process.  The health industry has to stop gouging patients and more reasonable pricing needs to be put into place and enforced.  Building more schools and hospitals isn’t the solution.

One earbud fell out of my ear and I heard a girl near me say that her one vote wouldn’t make a difference.  The point is that if you put ever person saying that together, you have a block of votes that WOULD make a difference.  So I REALLY hate that saying.  Which leads me to how angry I feel towards people who didn’t vote for that reason, didn’t vote because they couldn’t be bothered, voted for third party candidates and threw away their vote or voted for a write-in and also threw away their vote.  Anyone voting for a write-in or a third party is actually voting for the person they LEAST want to win.  In nearly every case, that would have actually caused Trump to have lost those states rather than have won.

On the whole, I’m still in shock.  I could go on and on, but this is getting long enough as it is.  I’ve also lost my direction as I was working on this between tasks and at lunch.  I didn’t have the advantage of taking today off work.  There are so many things to talk about where this went wrong and will continue to go wrong that maybe I should save those for another time.

The Seasoning House.

Posted in Activities, Entertainment, Movies and Theatre, Writing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 1, 2015 by urbannight

This movie is about a brothel. All the girls in it are kidnapped and drugged. They are kidnapped by a military unit. While the film is a British film, it seems to be set in some Eastern Bloc country after the fall of the USSR when there was all that fighting over there. I’m guessing the name of the brothel was The Seasoning House as it is the name of the film. I’m not sure as it is never mentioned in the movie.

I feel I should mention that one of the things that caught my eye about this film is that Sean Pertwee is in it. I didn’t think Pertwee was a terribly common name so I had to look him up. He is, indeed, the son of Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor. He plays the commander that is using his unit to kidnap young women from the towns and take them to the brothel. In fact, the military men seem to be the primary customer base for the place.

They take a young girl who is deaf and mute. Parts of the movie are filmed with no sound other than background music and it is effective for getting into the head of the girl who will be called Angel.

For some reason, movies fall apart around biological function. Angel is def and someone drops a bucket next to her head with a loud clatter for the audience. The implication is the sound woke her but she is def. More likely she felt the vibration through the metal bed frame. But the give the impression it is sound. At another point, someone goes pst pst to her and she turns her head. There is not viable explanation to that. It isn’t like he was close to her. He was several yards away. Lastly, it looks like she is emptying slop buckets into one bucket. But the girls are tied to the bed by one hand. The slop bucket is out of reach. So how are they using it?

Angel herself is very pretty but has a very large, strawberry birth mark on one side of her face. Victor, the man who runs/owns the brothel, keeps her for himself and has her take care of the girls. He seems to treat her with a very strange sort of gentleness and kindness contrary to the rest of his actions.

This movie is dark and dirty and violent and generally horrible. Yet is has some bizarre moments of cinematic beauty. The scenes with no sound but background music, when Angel starts to wash the hand of a girl whose was killed by a soldier as he raped her, when Victor is showing Angel how to inject a girl w/ heroin.

Angel bonds with a girl who knows sign language. Her father was deaf. And through flashbacks, we learn that Angel’s own father was also a violent and abusive man. Her mother kicked him out. So Angel is upset when this girl’s pelvis is broken by a customer. The doctor is brought in and Victor implies the doctor can use her for something that is never explained. The doctor says that she is in no fit condition. Victor says some things about the past and clearly has a hold over the doctor but it isn’t explained. This becomes sort of important later.

Victor seems to be looking forward to a time when everything will be different, when he and Angel can leave and start over someplace new. He seems to think himself in love with her. Why is never really explained. Does he think that because he keeps her safe from the customers and is somehow kinder and gentler with her even though he forces himself on her that she will somehow love him for it? Does he think that because of her birthmark and her being deaf and mute that she would be grateful that someone would want her? It really makes no sense.  I have a theory that when we see evil characters trying to be good or gentle about something and not to turn it around as a trick, we are seeing a weird peek into the person they would have been, should have been, had they not ended up being a sick and twisted individual.

The people who kidnapped Angel and killed her mother (she had a sister, I’m wondering if that was the girl Victor kills in the beginning to frighten the other girls into cooperation) arrive in town again. I think this must be a military town because the commander acts like he owns the place and later acts like he own a machine shop that Angel tries to hide in. He orders everyone out and they go. Anyway, they come into the brothel and this freaks Angel out.

Time passing is hinted at as the commander implies that he is in security now. One of his men is sent in to the girl with the broken pelvis and she ends up dying. Angel now starts her killing spree. Only it isn’t a spree so much. She is really the only one she kills on purpose. The rest she kills as she is defending herself and in some cases, almost accidental. The fact that no one ‘really’ catches her is more a factor of dumb luck and her own desperation to get away.

Eventually, the last one standing is the commander dude and she is in the machine shop, (not really, I don’t know what it was so that is what I’m calling it) and she gets into the duct work and pipes to escape him. He tries to follow her and eventually gets really stuck. I mean good and stuck. The more he tries to get unstuck the worse it gets. He starts to beg her to help him. He is trying to kill her, he is responsible for her mother’s death and likely her sister as well, he kidnapped her and sent her to this brothel where the owner is raping her, and he wants her to help him. At this point, she happens to be facing him so she is able to read his lips as he does this. She produces a rag from someplace. As her clothes are pretty shredded up, it is probably cloth she ripped off. She shoved it in his mouth so he can’t talk and leaves him stuck. The implication being that he will die a slow death of starvation in the duct or pipe.

Now she gets out of the shop, continues running across more fields until she comes to an old lady working in her garden. The lady start to call for help and the doctor who tended the girls at the brothel comes out of the house. The old woman takes a sobbing Angel inside while the doctor looks both ways and then closes the door. End of film.

So, what did Victor have over the doctor? What was the doctor using girls for since all we know is that a girl with a broken pelvis was unsuitable? Did Angel just get out of the frying pan only to find herself in the fire now? We don’t know because this is where the story stops.

I find it very frustrating. I want to know how something ends. Even if it is not a happy end, I want an ending. Not a great big question mark.

And The Violence Grows.

To me, a person who has only been watching election cycles since 1980 when Regan beat Carter, I think the rage seems to be getting worse.  In the past, once people got over the election an moved on, there was more cooperation.  There were always partisan issues, but more cooperation.

This last election was the first time I saw one party completely refused to do anything that might aid the winning party.  It was the first time I saw Republicans actually go as far as reversing their stances on issue if that stance had been the same as or similar to the stance the Oval Office was taking.

The election prior to that one, where Bush was re-elected, which was bitter and brutal and down right cruel, saw some degree of common ground after everything was over and done with.  But the anti-incumbent rhetoric was growing more virulent even then.

It didn’t help that during previous primaries, (before the Obama/McCain campaign) the GOP moderates started to swing into the camps of the Extreme Right as it became more and more obvious that they would be running against either a woman or a black man.

Now a person who is a Republican cannot be a moderate at all.  The entire party, over the past 5 years, has swung farther and farther right.  But that started earlier.  I can’t pin point when, all I know is that about 8 years ago I realized the Republican party was no longer valid to me.  They were out of date and instead of adapting, they were trying to drag the country back to the 1950’s.  So I left the part and became an Independent with a weird blend of liberal and libertarian leanings.  I have found that the harder the GOP tries to drag us back to the 1950’s, the more liberal I become.

The public itself is getting more and more extreme and pulling farther and farther apart.  Maybe for the same reasons I’ve started becoming more liberal.   I expect this to continue and to see more and more violence perpetrated against people who have opposing opinions.  The people with the most rage are moving farther right and left than most of the rest of us at a much faster rate.  This four-year term has seen far more politically motivated violence between liberals and conservatives than any span I can remember. It feels like the country is starting to crack up.

I do not think this is a good thing but do not really see a way out of it.

When did it get so close to election day?

I don’t have regular T.V. anymore. The cable bill was too much so I decided I was fine with Netflix and Hulu. As a result, all my election information is accessed over the internet. Newspapers, News Sites, Feeds, Blogs, Social Media. The result is, on one hand, a far more civilized race. Only in the sense that I don’t see the candidates attacking each other. I see people attacking one or the other, but not the candidates, for the most part. But it never felt like we were getting down to the nitty-gritty. Which means I really need to go change my address on my DL so I can reregister to vote. I had moved.

I rather dread this election. I don’t have a strong feeling for it. A year ago, I would have said it was the Republican’s election to lose. They couldn’t seem to field a single choice that was worth a vote. I’m not happy with some of the things Obama did. But I am starting to feel a terrible dread that Romney has a chance. Sometimes I feel like we are at the beginning of the end. That the extreme partisan politics is getting farther apart with each passing year and the rhetoric of the average person is getting more vitriolic.

I feel that, as a nation, we are on the verge of a violent precipice. The violence has already started, isolated but highly visible events, that will only start to increase. We have an economic model that is no longer sustainable and an environmental situation that may or may not already be at the point of no return. I feel like was are on the stop of a very slippery slope and about to slide down the other side and there is an essence of inevitability about it.

I wonder if it is better to let it all implode, explode, I’m not sure which is the correct term in this case. Part of me wishes it could have waited until I was gone. Or happened earlier when I was young enough to feel like I could be a vibrant part of it. As it is, I feel that the results of this election may be irrelevant. That the fallout, either way, will be dramatic. And the best anyone can do is batten down the hatches and try to survive it.

Hatred feeds Violence, Violence feeds Fear, Fear feeds Hatred

It is the circle of hate.

Jason Todd Ready, a Neo-Nazi founder of an anti-immigrant border militia appears to have shot his girlfriend, her daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend, her 15 month old granddaughter, and then himself.  He advocated the use of deadly force to stop illegal immigration (he was based inArizona).  It may or may not be of any note, but his girlfriend’s last name was Mederos.

He blamed the violence in theU.S.on minorities and illegals, (Jewish, Blacks, and Mexicans, specifically). And then he does something like this. So where did the violence really come from?

It was already inside of him, already a part of him. People who advocate the use of violence to solve immigration problems are not a part of the solution. They are evidence of a greater problem in theU.S.The insidious nature of hatred that tells people that violence against the ‘other’ is okay and slowly leads to the thought of violence against anyone ‘not me’ is okay.

Ever since 9/11, hate levels in this country have been rising.  Inroads against ‘Hate’ that society had been making started to vanish.  Hatred of Muslims and Middle Easterners have continued to rise and increased hatred of Black Americans as well.

Proof of this is the fact that so many Americans still insist on believing that Obama is a Muslim and that the government officials in the state ofHawaiiare lying to the rest of the country and that Obama’s birth certificate is a fake.

Proof of increasing levels of hatred is found in the fact that so many people think that it is good and right to give up freedoms we fought a revolutionary war to get in order to be ‘safer’ from terrorists.

To me it is just proof that we allowed the terrorists to win.  Killing bin Laden was not a victory since we already lost the most important part of the ‘war’.  Our very lifestyle was altered so that people living with a layer of fear over everyday life.  This layer of fear feeds the hatred.  The hatred feeds the violence.  The violence feeds the fear.  All in one downward spiral.  It is a Viscious Circle.
